Thousands of women are diagnosed each year with gynecologic cancer. September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and the perfect time to discuss the signs and symptoms of this deadly disease. The American Cancer Society estimates that this year more than 113,500 women will be diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer, and more than 33,000 will die from the disease. Ovarian Cancer Ovarian cancer includes cancer of the ovaries, fallopian tubes and the primary peritoneum (the tissue lining the abdominal wall and covering the abdominal organs). Together, this group is the fifth leading cause of cancer death for women in the United States. Symptoms of ovarian cancer can include: Fatigue (extreme tiredness) Upset stomach Back pain Pain during sex Constipation Changes in a woman’s period, such as heavier bleeding than normal or irregular bleeding Abdominal (belly) swelling with weight loss During regular pelvic exams, your doctor checks for signs of ovarian cancer. From the wee age of 6 years old, Dr. Heidi Harms was inspired by her grandfather. “I aspired to follow my grandfather’s footsteps. His specialty at the time was EENT (eyes, ears, nose and throat, which eventually became the two specialties of Ophthalmology and ENT). As a child, I didn’t necessarily feel I was going to pursue the same specialty as my grandfather, but rather strove to achieve his degree of knowledge and display the same compassion and caring that he did,” she shared.

Following her years in research, Dr. Harms pursued her 6-year-old self’s dream and attended the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, where she earned her medical degree in 2001. She returned to Texas for her residency at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where she served as a Chief Resident in her final year. Board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, she joined Advanced Women’s Healthcare in 2005.

Endometriosis
When medication and non-invasive procedures are unable to relieve symptoms, surgery remains the accepted and most effective treatment for a range of gynecologic conditions. These include, but are not limited to, cervical and uterine cancer, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, uterine prolapse and menorrhagia or excessive bleeding. Traditional open gynecologic surgery, using a large incision for access to the uterus and surrounding anatomy, has for many years been the standard approach to many gynecologic procedures. Yet with open surgery can come significant pain, trauma, a long recovery process and threat to surrounding organs and nerves.

Baylor University in Waco, Texas, fit that criteria, and she completed her undergraduate biology degree in 1992. Following graduation, she worked in a biomedical research facility in Albuquerque, where they focused on respiratory research, examining the effects of various chemical exposures on risk of lung cancer development.

Mammography
A mammogram is an x-ray examination of the breasts, used to detect and diagnose breast diseases. A woman’s chance of developing cancer in her lifetime is 1 in 8. A new breast cancer patient is diagnosed every 2.5 minutes. Over 2 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the US today. The American Cancer Society recommends that all women have a baseline screening mammogram between the ages of 35 and 40. Beginning at the age of 40, women should have an annual screening mammogram. While having a mammogram you may experience some discomfort for a brief time during each x-ray, but it should not be painful. Mammography is the best tool in early detection of breast cancer giving patients a much better chance of survival and leading a long, productive life. Early detection saves lives. Pap tests are important tests for most women in an effort to detect cervical cancer or other cervical issues. A pap smear, also called a pap exam or pap test, is a screening to test for cervical cancer or other abnormalities in the cervix. Early detection of cervical cancer with a pap smear gives you a greater chance of beating it. The exam can also detect abnormal cells that suggest cancer may develop in the future. But when should a woman begin getting the test? Doctors recommend repeating pap testing every three years for women ages 21 to 65. Women ages 30 and older may consider pap testing every five years, combining the procedure with human papillomavirus (HPV) testing. While this is the general rule for women, there are some risk factors that may require testing more frequently. These include: A diagnosis of cervical cancer or a pap test that reveals precancerous cells Exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES) before birth. (DES is a synthetic form of estrogen that was prescribed to pregnant women between 1940 and 1970.) Minimally Invasive Surgery
Dr. Reyes enjoys caring for women in all stages of life. Her clinical interests include preventive care, general and high-risk obstetrics, family planning/contraception and bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. In addition, she likes helping women through the challenges of menopause and sexual dysfunction. She is proficient at minimally invasive surgery, including the use of the da Vinci robot and offers in-office procedures such as endometrial ablations.
Robotic Surgery
Dr. Harms is interested in all areas of care in Obstetrics and Gynecology, including minimally invasive gynecologic, pelvic and robotic surgery as well as hormone replacement, high and low risk obstetrics, contraception management and preventive care medicine. She is certified in da Vinci robotic surgery and is currently pursuing certification in Age Management Medicine. Dr. Harms explained, “I’ve been drawn toward Age Management Medicine because it is a proactive and preventative approach to healthcare that focuses on modulating the natural process of aging BEFORE the onset of disease.”
Hysterectomy
Single Site Robotic hysterectomy is the next step in the evolution of hysterectomies. We now have the ability to perform a hysterectomy (or cholecystectomy, or appendectomy) through a virtually scar less procedure. The Robotic Single Site procedure is performed through a 2.5 cm incision that goes directly through your belly button. This minimizes scaring and post operative pain. While better for the patient, it is technically more difficult for the surgeon to perform. Surgeons must receive specialized training, and already be proficient at performing Robotic hysterectomies.
