Maternal Fetal Medicine physicians have advanced training in the diagnosis and management of mothers who face unexpected problems during their pregnancy. Dr. Balcomb practiced in Canada until 1994, when she immigrated to the USA. She was an active member of the Emerson Hospital Medical Staff in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and she was also Chairman of the Department for several years. She also has served on the Board of Directors of Emerson Hospital.

Maternal Fetal Medicine(MFM) is a subspecialty of obstetrics that specializes in the screening, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care of mothers and babies with a pregnancy that is un-routine or high risk.

Emerson Hospital offers a highly qualilfied medical team including 24 hour in-house anesthesiologists and pediatric hospitalists are on-site 24 hour a day. There is a Level II Nursery with neonatology support from Massachusetts General Hospital and neonatal resuscitation certified RN’s and obstetricians. In addition, there are two high-risk pregnancy specialists from Brigham and Women’s Hospital available for consultation and support for women with high-risk pregnancies.

At AFA OB/GYN we are able to offer you OB/GYN ultrasounds in our Concord, Leominster and Westford offices. The ultrasounds are ordered by your provider, performed by a registered sonographer and interpreted by radiologists affiliated with Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston MFM perinatologists. Obstetrical ultrasound serves, in a way, as a “physical” exam of the fetus. It can provide valuable information about the fetus’s health and well-being, for example...
MRI
CNMs work with all members of the health care team, including physicians. Midwifery care fits well with the services provided by obstetrician/gynecologists (OB/GYNs), who are experts in high risk, medical complications and surgery. By working with OB/GYNs, midwives can ensure that a specialist is available if a high-risk condition should arise. AFA OB/GYN has midwives as part of our team so all women can receive the right care for their individual health care needs. Our CNMs are licensed to prescribe a full range of medications and treatments, including pain control medications. They can also order medical tests such as ultrasounds, MRI, lab work, mammograms, bone density screenings and more based on what is needed. Nurse midwives have admitting privileges at Emerson Hospital.

AFA Obstetrics & Gynecology, PC is pleased to work closely with Boston MFM and Emerson MFM, who are Brigham and Women’s physicians. It can be stressful to have a pregnancy that may be considered high-risk or has unexpectedly become complicated. It is important to all of us here at AFA Obstetrics & Gynecology, PC to make sure that this very specialized care be accessible and our families have a team that is working together to ensure the best outcome for both mother and baby. MFM services are available both in our office with Boston MFM and through the radiology department within the hospital, Emerson MFM.
