Kidnapping
Violations of the law can result in fines and/or imprisonment for the offenders. Many of the statute’s provisions are punishable by fines and up to 20 years imprisonment. The guidelines are the same for offenders who interfere with enforcement of these laws. The punishment can extend up to a life sentence if the committing the given offense also involved attempted or successful kidnapping, sexual abuse, or killing of the victim. The following actions are all subject to these same punishments.

Employment Discrimination
Taaffe v. Drake, in which he helped restore two employees to their positions after they were forced to retire from their jobs in the Ohio State University English as a Second Language department by a pattern of age discrimination and harassment. The two plaintiffs not only regained their jobs; they obtained a substantial financial settlement and forced Ohio State to undergo substantial training and a university-wide review of its non-discrimination policies. Jeff also recently served as sole counsel at trial and on appeal for an Ohio State cancer researcher, helping her secure a new, court-ordered tenure review after the university wrongly denied her a fair review.
Employment Contract
Jeffrey P. Vardaro has been with the Gittes Law Group since 2007. During his time with the firm, Jeff has represented employees in state and federal discrimination, retaliation, harassment, and employment contract cases, as well as plaintiffs in police misconduct, public records, and federal business discrimination cases. He has argued in appeals before the Ohio Supreme Court and the federal Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and he has represented and served as co-counsel with organizations ranging from the NAACP, AARP Foundation Litigation, and Public Citizen to the Ohio Innocence Project and the Legal Aid Society of Columbus.

Fred was a contributing editor for Model Jury Instructions Employment Litigation (American Bar Association: 1994); the author of “Taxing Our Civil Rights,” Employee Rights Quarterly (Summer, 2000), and “Paper Promises: Race and Ohio Law After 1860,” History of Ohio Law (Ohio University Press: 2004). He served on the Advisory Board for Age Discrimination and Litigation, (James Publishing, 2000). Fred has also been a columnist for Ohio Trial Magazine.

Fred’s appellate work includes briefing and arguing numerous cases before both the federal courts of appeals and the Ohio Supreme Court. He has also argued before the United States Supreme Court. Among the precedent-setting decisions he has argued and won from the Ohio Supreme Court are those recognizing sexual harassment as a tort, allowing court actions for employment discrimination, holding that company officers and managers who discriminate against or harass employees can be sued personally, and allowing employees to file suits against employers when they are fired for reasons that violate important public policies in state and federal laws and regulations.
