As a sports chiropractor, my training involves learning how to best treat the body to effect changes in many ways for dysfunctional joints, muscles, ligaments, cartilage, fascia, and more. We know that chiropractic adjustments alter neurological pathways that change joint mechanics and alter muscle tone and tension, allowing for a change in biomechanics at local and more global regions. This is great and it works well, but what about all the ‘holistic’ training we receive? Chiropractors are supposed to take care of the whole body, inside and out, but most of us do not do that when we only treat the body from the outside. Intersegmental Traction
The technic incorporates not only proper application of technic protocols, but also a thorough understanding of its applicability to MRI results (if available). The care is individualized for each type of disc pathology. Other forms of ‘axial decompression’ have the patient supine (facing up) and simply pull the patient straight; this may not be effective for many forms of disc pathology. Any form of traction therapy for disc problems needs to be specific for the type of problem, not just the same for everyone!
Manipulation Therapy
Dr. Manison, I have sometimes heard that there is an increased risk of getting a stroke with chiropractic manipulation. Is there any truth to this?

Acupuncture
S Dry Needling the same as Acupuncture? NO, it is not. In fact, not at all. Whereas Acupuncture points are always there (based on the meridian system), Myofascial Trigger Points (MTrPs) and other soft tissue injuries, as treated by Dry Needling, are only apparent when the associated pathology is present. In truth, the only thing in common with Acupuncture is the needle.
Disc Herniation Treatment
Big News Dr. Manison’s case study on cervical flexion/distraction for a cervical disc herniation was published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine (JCM) in December 2011. JCM is a medically indexed, peer-reviewed journal, and getting published as a clinical doctor is a big deal! It’s safe to say that Dr. Manison has the highest level of education and clinical experience in the Columbia / Ellicott City / Baltimore area when it comes to addressing disc pathology!
