Arthritis
When a joint becomes arthritic, degeneration and inflammation of the cartilage, bone and surrounding tissues occurs. Arthritis generally presents later in life and is characterized by the gradual onset of pain, disability, and deformity. However, this process can occur more rapidly in younger individuals, particularly if the joint is deformed or has been injured. The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis (degenerative arthritis). Arthritis may also be caused by inflammation (rheumatoid arthritis) or be a result of trauma. Rarely, osteonecrosis (death of the bone) may occur and lead to arthritis. Regardless of the initial type of arthritis, the result is permanent with progressive damage to the cartilage and bone.

Cryotherapy
REST - Although it is good to start moving the injured area as soon as possible, you must also take time to rest after an injury. All injuries need time to heal; proper rest helps the process. Other common therapies that help with the healing process include mild electrical currents (electro stimulation), cold packs (cryotherapy), heat packs (thermo therapy), sound waves (ultrasound), and massage.
Primary Care
It is always a good idea to see your primary care doctor before having surgery. In most cases, I will require that you have a clearance letter from your primary care doctor before surgery is scheduled. This is especially necessary when a person has multiple or severe medical problems.
Electrocardiogram
At the end of your office visit, you will receive the phone number of the surgery scheduler. We will help you with insurance approval for the surgery and deciding on a surgery date. Once the date of your surgery is set, you will need to get some routine blood and urine tests. In addition, you may need a chest x-ray and electrocardiogram if you have not had these done recently. This information will be used to determine the type of anesthesia you should receive and screen for health problems that may need treatment before your operation. In general, you will need to be seen again by your surgeon just prior to surgery to have a complete history and physical examination performed. At this time, any remaining questions can be answered. You will register at the hospital after your evaluation and complete any lab tests that have been ordered.

Arthroscopic surgery is a "less invasive" procedure and is often very successful. Even though rare, the arthroscopy procedure is still a surgery and all surgeries do have some risks, such as infection, blood clots, etc.

Joint Replacement
Joint replacement consists of surgically removing painful, arthritic, worn or cancerous parts of the joint and replacing them with engineered synthetic parts. Although joint replacement is an effective and common procedure is usually considered only after other therapies have failed. The goal is to relieve the pain and to regain optimal use of the joint. A physical examination and various tests will show the extent of damage to the joint. Dr. Kehoe or Dr. Hanlon will help you decide if joint replacement surgery is right for you.

Arthroscopy
Arthroscopic surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to treat various problems of the joints. Arthroscopy is generally done on an outpatient basis and is commonly used for the treatment of knee and shoulder joints; repairing cartilage and meniscus problems in the knee, and removing inflammation and repairing rotator cuff tears in the shoulder.

ORTHOVISC® is a FDA-approved therapy medication injected directly into the knee and is used to treat knee pain in patients with joint inflammation (osteoarthritis). Patients who have not responded to other treatments such as acetaminophen, exercise, or physical therapy may benefit from it's use. The medication is similar to a substance that occurs naturally in the joints. Acting as a lubricant and shock absorber in the joint, helping the knee to move smoothly, thereby lessening pain. The series of injections can last up to 6 months, although individual results may vary, some people feel pain relief after the first injection.
