Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a common eye disease that normally affects older patients. The optic nerve becomes damaged and results in vision loss. Glaucoma can be classified into two different forms: open angle glaucoma and angle closure glaucoma. Open angle glaucoma is the more common form and is often undetected until the later stages of the disease. People who have open angle glaucoma do not realize that their vision is slowly weakening because there are no warning signs. Eventually, the disease will present itself and become severe. Angle closure glaucoma is less common than open angle glaucoma but the impact is felt almost immediately. Angle closure is often more painful and progresses much faster. That is why it is important to have regular eye exams with your doctor in order to detect these diseases.

Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is an age-related disease which has a negative impact on the retina. The macula, which is the center of vision in the retina, is damaged as the disease progresses or worsens. Macular degeneration can be categorized into "wet" and "dry" forms. The dry form of macular degeneration may involve calcifications forming in the retina, and the retinal cells may begin to decrease through a process call atrophy. The wet form of macular degeneration involves new blood vessels growing under the retina, causing scarring and swelling on the retinal tissues.
Laser Eye Surgery
Our doctors are all board certified ophthalmologists with the skills and training necessary to treat your vision disorders. Ophthalmologists are eye doctors that have the education and training to examine, diagnose, and treat vision disorders. An ophthalmologist has a more thorough training than an optometrist. The advanced training allows ophthalmologists to perform eye surgery on patients. An optometrist can examine and diagnose an eye disease but they may not be able to provide treatment so they will recommend an ophthalmologist.
Cataracts
The eye has a normally clear lens that is located just behind the pupil. A cataract occurs when the natural lens in the eye becomes cloudy. The lens is responsible for focusing light on the retina. When a cataract is present the amount of light that reaches the retina is diminished. As the cataract develops and grows, less and less light reaches the retina which causes the vision to become worse. Depending on the size of the cataract, the clouding effect may have either a small or great impact on the vision.
Cataract Surgery
Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in the world. Studies have shown that about 10% of all Americans suffer from cataracts. The number drastically rises with age, 70% of Americans over the age of 75 suffer from cataracts. Despite the high number of people with cataracts, advances in technology have made cataract surgery one of the most successful surgical procedures in the world. Cataract surgery restores vision to patients and allows them to return to activities that may have been put on hold. With over one million cataract surgeries performed each year in the United States, cataract surgery has become the most common eye procedure.
Eye Exam
Vision cannot be restored once it has been lost due to glaucoma. The best prevention for glaucoma is to have regularly schedule eye exams to ensure your eye health. By having regularly scheduled eye exams your doctor can help to catch the disease before it progresses. Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication that arises from diabetes. The diabetes weakens the blood vessels that supply nourishment to the retina. This is important because the retina is where light is focused on the back of the eye and allows for good vision. If the weak blood vessels leak, swell, or develop neovascularization (abnormal new blood vessels) vision loss may occur.

Ultrasound
Modern day cataract surgery is done by a procedure called phacoemulsification. The center of the lens is softened by ultrasound waves until a small incision can be made. Then the small needle-like device goes in and breaks apart the cataract. The same needle is used to vacuum out the cataract from the eye. The incision made is so small that no stitches are required. After the cataract is removed a lens implant is usually put into place. The surgeons at Great Maryland Eye Physicians will discuss your options with you.
