Flat feet, a common condition among adults, occur when the arches of the feet collapse, leading to the entire foot making contact with the ground. While the majority of babies are born with flat feet, others develop this condition later in life, and several factors can contribute to adult-onset flat feet. Overpronation is a common cause of flat feet. This is an abnormal inward rolling of the foot while walking, often caused by muscle imbalances or improper foot structure. Trauma to the foot or ankle, such as fractures or ligament damage, can alter the foot's structure and also lead to flat feet. Aging can contribute to flat feet, as the ligaments and tendons lose elasticity, weakening the foot's arch support. People who are obese may notice their feet are flat, as a result of the stress that is placed on the feet from the added weight. Genetics and certain medical conditions can cause flat feet, including rheumatoid arthritis and nerve disorders. Understanding the causes of adult flat feet can aid in early detection and prompt intervention, ensuring better foot health in the long run. If you have flat feet, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to manage this condition.
Plantar Fasciitis
Some common contributors that lead to foot and ankle injuries in the realm of sports include not stretching properly or failing to warm up, wearing the incorrect footwear needed for your particular sport, as well as not taping or providing your feet and ankle with the needed support. Allan M. Boike, D.P.M., FACFAS began his new role as dean of Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine on July 1, 2014. Dr. Boike previously served as the director of the Podiatric Medical and Surgical Residency Training Programs and section head of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery in the Foot and Ankle Center of the Orthopaedic and Rheumatology Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Boike also had primary practice locations at the Cleveland Clinic's main campus and the Strongsville Family Health Center.

Dr. Butler is an Assistant Professor of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery in the Division of Foot & Ankle Surgery and Biomechanics at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine. Dr. Butler completed his medical education at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine in Independence, OH. Dr. Butler went on to complete post-graduate training in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Jefferson Health System in Stratford, NJ. Dr. Butler brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in both podiatric medicine and surgery with an emphasis on diabetic foot care, sports medicine, pediatric care and preventive medicine. Dr. Butler is on staff and performs his surgeries at Cleveland Clinic Euclid Hospital. He practiced previously at Cornerstone Foot and Ankle in Sewell, NJ and was one of the teaching attendings at Jefferson Health Podiatric Residency program for four years, prior to joining KSUCPM/CFAC. He is board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and board qualified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Dr. Caldwell is the Senior Associate Dean at the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine (KSUCPM). Dr. Caldwell completed his undergraduate education at the University of South Florida, and earned a Master of Science from the University of Notre Dame in addition to earning his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from the former Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine (OCPM). He then completed his hospital residency at Florida Hospital in Orlando, FL. Dr. Caldwell is certified by the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine. In 2002, Dr. Caldwell was a Physician Executive Leadership Academy Fellow with Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Dr. Caldwell has earned his Administrators Certification by participating in the Kent State University Institute for Excellence Class of 2013. Dr. Caldwell returned to medical school and earned a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in 2017 from the International University of Health Sciences completing all of his clinical clerkships in the University Hospitals Health System and Clinton Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Ehredt is Board Certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery in both Foot and Reconstructive Rearfoot/Ankle Surgery. Dr. Ehredt's interests lie in Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgery, Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy, Limb Salvage, and Research. Hospital affiliations include the University Hospitals Richmond and Bedford Medical Centers, Cleveland Lutheran, South Pointe and Hillcrest Hospital locations, and the St. Vincent Charity Medical Center.

Dr. Johnson is an Associate Professor in the Division of Podiatric and General Medicine at the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine (KSUCPM). She graduated from Marshall University in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and again from St. Mary's School of Nursing/ Marshall University with an Associates in Nursing, passing her NCLEX and becoming a Registered Nurse in 2002. After completing her RN program, Dr. Johnson worked at St. Mary's Medical Center in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit until she began to matriculate at the former Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine (OCPM). She earned her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from OCPM in 2008, and completed a Podiatric Medical and Surgical 36-month residency at the University Hospitals- Richmond Medical Center/ OCPM Program in 2011. She later completed a Fellowship in Wound Care/ Infectious Disease in 2012. Dr. Johnson became board certified with the American Board of Podiatric Medicine in 2013.

Dr. Jacqueline Donovan, DPM, is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Foot & Ankle Sugery and Biomechanics, and is Double Board Certified in Foot and Reconstructive Rearfoot and Ankle Surgery. Dr. Donovan is on staff at University Hospitals Ahuja, Bedford and Richmond Campuses as well as Cleveland Clinic Fairview Hospital. Dr. Donovan completed her three year residency program at Grant Medical Center / OhioHealth in Columbus, Ohio where she served as co-chief followed by an Orthopedic Trauma Fellowship. She practiced in Columbus, Ohio and was active in the residency program for 4 years before returning to her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio.
Bunions
Common heel pain conditions include heel spurs and heel fractures. Morton’s neuroma is a condition that often comes with pain experienced at the ball of the foot, as well as sesamoiditis. Those suffering from discomfort in their arches may have flat feet or plantar fasciitis. Common issues that affect the toes include gout, bunions, blisters, corns and calluses, as well as hammertoe and ingrown toenail. An ankle sprains is also a common ailment that can lead to foot pain.

Corns and calluses are hard layers of skin that usually form due to friction. Generally, they will be in areas of the foot that are bearing weight, or areas that frequently rub against the shoe. Soft corns are typically found between the toes.

Achilles Tendonitis
There are many different causes of heel pain, including strains or sprains, tarsal tunnel syndrome, stress fractures, Achilles tendonitis, and heel bursitis. One of the most common causes of heel pain for children and teenagers specifically is Sever’s disease. Sever’s disease can develop due to overuse or repetitive microtrauma of the heel bone's growth plates. This condition is often seen among those who are active in sporting activities.

Some sports may be considered more dangerous in terms of foot and ankle injuries compared to others. These sports may include basketball, running, football, soccer, and dancing. Sports that require tightly worn shoes as well as have a particular focus on jumping typically run a higher risk of injury. Fungus Toenails
Fungal infections occur due to fungus getting through the cracks of the toes or cuts in your skin. Common signs that you may have a fungal infection include thicker than normal toenails, oddly shaped toenails, discoloration, a yellowish hue to the nail, and separation of the nail and nail bed. Fungal infections can affect anyone but are most common among men, those with diabetes or athlete’s foot, and smokers. The risk of having toenail fungus also increases as you age, if another family member has it, and if you have a weaker immune system.
Hammertoes
Hammertoe is a foot deformity that occurs due to an imbalance in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments that normally hold the toe straight. It can be caused by the type of shoes you wear, your foot structure, trauma, and certain disease processes.

A heel spur is a bony protrusion that occurs on the heel. It is often confused with plantar fasciitis, which is inflammation of the plantar fascia ligament. When a heel spur is painful it can make it quite difficult to walk.

Athlete's foot, also known as tinea pedis, can be an extremely contagious foot infection. It is commonly contracted in public changing areas and bathrooms, dormitory style living quarters, around locker rooms and public swimming pools, or anywhere your feet often come into contact with other people.
Ingrown Toenails
Treatment for an ingrown toenail will vary on a case by case basis. One form of treatment requires lifting the ingrown nail and placing a splint or piece of cotton underneath. Another method for a more severe case would involve partially removing the nail. For cases that need extreme care, the nail itself and tissue would have to be removed.
Metatarsalgia
Much of the body's weight is supported by the metatarsals, the long bones of the foot. When these bones become inflamed or irritated, it results in a condition known as metatarsalgia, or more commonly, pain in the ball of the foot. This causes varying degrees of discomfort that can disrupt daily activities. Metatarsalgia is often seen in active individuals, as a result of overuse and high-impact activities like running and jumping. Constrictive footwear and high heels that create pressure around the metatarsals can also contribute to ball of foot pain. Being overweight increases the risk of developing metatarsalgia. Symptoms include pain between the toes and the arch, which can intensify during movement and ease when resting. Numbness around the toes, especially the big toe and second toe, is common. Stretching and strengthening foot muscles, as well as the Achilles tendon, are essential for recovery from metatarsalgia. Proper footwear with arch support can aid in cushioning the foot's arch and providing relief. Surgical options might be considered if other pain management remedies prove inadequate. If you are experiencing pain in the ball of the foot on a continual basis, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for a full examination and discussion of treatment options.

Plantar fasciitis may occur when the band of tissues that support the arch of your foot experience too much stress. These tissues can become strained from frequently performing sporting activities, thus causing inflammation and pain at the bottom of the heel.

She completed her undergraduate work at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, and earned her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from the former Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine (OCPM), now the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine. She completed a residency and fellowship in podiatric orthopedics with the Cleveland Foot Clinic, now the Cleveland Foot & Ankle Clinic.
Podiatric Surgery
In addition to his clinical duties, Dr. Ehredt is the course coordinator for Intro to Podiatric Surgery and Traumatology. He also lectures extensively in the Podiatric Surgery I and II courses, and is part of the surgical faculty for the Saint Vincent Charity Medical Center's Podiatric Surgery Residency Program.
