The Surgery room is equipped with Sevoflurane anesthesia which is actively scavenged from the patient and the staff and vent outdoors for environmental safety. Sevoflurane is used in Human medicine in Pediatrics. It is an odorless gas breathed in by mask. It will cause a child or a bird to fall asleep faster and wake up smoother. Sevoflurane is much more expensive than Isoflurane but we feel the benefits are worth the expense. While a patient is asleep, we actively breathe for the patient every six seconds. By supplementing oxygen to the patient while their breathing is decreased under anesthesia, we increase dramatically the survivability of small patients. We utilize a warm water circulating heating pad under the surgical patient and we surround the patient with a Bear Hugger. This human operating machine provides 95 degrees to 115 degrees in a encircling pillow of heat to insure the patient does not loose more than 2 degrees of body heat during surgery. This ensures greater success in recovery. Monitors are vital to success of surviving surgery. We use a rubber, rectal thermometer for body temperature. We use an apnea monitor to audibly hear each breath a patient takes during surgery. Next we use a Doppler Monitor placed over an artery to hear each heart beat of a patient. Adjustments in oxygen and anesthesia levels can be made when breathing or heart rates slow down. We use a laptop electrocardiograph (ECG) to record heartbeats as high as 500 beats a minute for a bird. We can monitor our patients or fax or email recordings to a cardiologist for immediate review. Surgery is equipped with Radiosurgery which is comparable to Laser but shown to have less collateral tissue damage. A pair of tweezers which have radiowaves flowing through the tips allows tissue to be picked up and cut in two with no bleeding. Hemoclips replace sutures in birds and small patients. These tiny stainless steel clamps are placed on arteries replacing the old fashioned sutures. An intraosseous catheter is placed in the center of the ulna bone of the wing. This technology is used extensively in premature babies and infants at Children's Hospital. This catheter allows us to replace blood loss in birds and other patients with crystalloids fluids, colloidal fluids, Hetastarch, Oxyheoglobin or whole blood transfusions. Emergency drugs for changes in breathing, blood pressure or heart rate can immediately be administered.
