This is a partnership-track position for a team-oriented physician with fellowship training in Body Imaging, Abdominal Imaging, or equivalent. Dedicated training, expertise, and interest in abdominal MRI and advanced CT are required – including CT colonoscopy, rectal cancer staging MR, prostate MR, etc. The MRA Body Imaging Section is supported by a specialized 3-D lab, and uses the latest technology in both CT and MR including multiple dual-source scanners. The applicant should have sufficient general radiology skills to participate in evening call.

Robert (Bob) Hervey Lafferty was born in Davidson, NC on August 28, 1878. He received AB and MA degrees in Chemistry from Davidson College and taught for several years before pursuing additional training from the North Carolina Medical College and the University of Chicago. He began work in Urology and Radiology in 1915 at the Charlotte Sanatorium and restricted his work to Radiology in 1917 succeeding his colleague Dr. Squires upon his departure. During WW1 Dr. Lafferty did all of the radiology work for Camp Greene in Charlotte. He was joined in practice by Dr. Clyde Philips in 1918 and by Dr. O.D. Baxter in 1937. Dr. Lafferty had a distinguished career during which he served as the first Vice President of the RSNA. He married Edith K. Fry of Charlotte on January 17, 1914, and had two sons; Dr. R.H. Lafferty Jr and Dr. John Odgen Lafferty. John Lafferty trained in Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania and served during WW2 in the 120th Evacuation Hospital in General Patton’s third army where he helped to liberate Buchenwald Concentration Camp. On June 1, 1945, he wrote a letter home to his family about his experience. Bob Lafferty died from complications of Leukemia in 1950. His son John Lafferty continued in his practice and Mecklenburg Radiology Associates was formally incorporated in 1971.

This imaging modality uses minimal amounts of radioactive material to create images of the body’s internal structures. A special camera called a Gamma camera and a computer create images that are then analyzed and interpreted by a highly trained radiologist. These tests can help diagnose various health conditions and detect disease in very early stages. Nuclear medicine is also helpful for therapeutic purposes. Ultrasound
Percutaneous ablation is a targeted, highly effective, minimally invasive cancer treatment that involves freezing or burning cancer cells to lethal temperatures. It involves placing one or more needles through the skin and into the tumor, guided using real-time ultrasound or CT. Once the needles are in position, they emit targeted energy (in the form of ice or heat) which destroys the tumor with minimal damage to surrounding normal tissues.

Computed Tomography
Computed tomography (CT) or computed axial tomography (CAT) is a fast, non-invasive medical imaging test that uses advanced x-ray equipment to generate cross-sectional images of the body. A CT scan produces detailed images of internal organs, bones, soft tissue, and blood vessels. CT is also used to help plan and guide interventional or therapeutic procedures and monitor the effectiveness of therapy, particularly in cancer patients. Radiologists customize CT exams to answer a particular clinical question on every area of the body.
Chemotherapy
Introducing a catheter (a thin, flexible tube) into the blood vessels through an incision in the skin the size of a pencil tip (in either the groin or the wrist). Live imaging (X-ray or CT) guides the catheter to the tumor-feeding arteries, where the particles are injected. These drug-infused particles lodge within the substance of the tumor, killing tumor cells with high doses of chemotherapy and blocking the tumor
Radiation Therapy
S normal arteries. Depending on the tumor type and goal of the procedure, particles are injected which are specifically designed to either take away the blood supply to the tumor, deliver concentrated chemotherapy, or deliver localized radiation therapy.
