Cataracts
Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 60 or older and have become increasingly common as our population ages and lives longer. Treatment requires a quick, minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove your cloudy lens and replace it with a new lens implant. Over 3 million cataract surgeries are performed each year in the United States.
Cataract Surgery
The procedure for refractive lens exchange is virtually identical to cataract surgery. The difference is that in RLE, the lens being replaced is clear, rather than a cloudy lens due to a cataract. Many patients consider this as a preventative procedure earlier in life as it eliminates a patient's need for cataract surgery later in life.

Prior to joining Whitten Laser Eye, Dr. Waterman worked at Kaiser Permanente where she focused on promoting preventative care of the patient. This entailed working hand in hand with internal medicine to ensure patients with hypertension, diabetes, and other systemic conditions were well monitored. She also participated in telemedicine consults reading retinal photos as a screening measure for diabetic patients.

We use several methods to assess proper ocular motility or eye movements such as: do your eyes move together? Strabismus is a common childhood motility problem, but misalignment can occur in adults too. Patients with thyroid disease or orbital trauma can often have ocular motility problems.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Many of us, however, will experience more serious age-related eye diseases that can significantly affect our quality of life and even lead to blindness if not treated. These include glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

Ultrasound
The surgeon makes an incision and uses ultrasound waves to break up the hard, yellow proteins that form the cataract, leaving the lens membrane in place.

General Surgery
After receiving his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University, Dr. Marc Malouf earned his MD from George Washington University, followed by an internship in general surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond, VA. He then completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center, where he gained extensive experience in traumatic eye injuries, glaucoma, cataract surgeries, and was involved in multiple research projects and medical journal publications. He has also served as a principle investigator on a clinical trial working to develop a new treatment for dry eyes.
