Your throat will then be numbed with medication (lidocaine) so that the bronchoscope will not be irritating. All patients are given oxygen through nasal prongs, and the level of oxygen is monitored in your blood during the procedure with an oximeter. All patients are connected to a heart monitor (EKG). You will also have an intravenous (IV) started so that you may receive intravenous medications which will make you drowsy. (Except for rare occasions, you will not be put under general anesthesia, so you will not be completely asleep).

Lung cancer is a disease in which an abnormal, uncontrolled growth of cells occurs in the tissue of the lungs. The lungs are the breathing organs located in the chest. The lungs bring in fresh oxygen, which is distributed throughout the body by the blood. The lungs also remove carbon dioxide, a waste product, from the blood. The lungs are spongy organs that are surrounded by a thin, protective membrane called the pleura. Each lung is divided into lobes; the right lung has three lobes, and the left lung has two lobes. Within the lungs are flexible airways called bronchi, which branch out into many smaller airways called bronchioles. The bronchioles lead to small, grape-like clusters of air sacs called alveoli. Oxygen and carbon dioxide pass to and from the alveoli into capillaries, the smallest of the vessels that carry blood throughout the body. Lung cancer develops when a cell in the lung becomes abnormal and begins to duplicate uncontrollably. These abnormal cells eventually form a mass, or tumor, and can spread to other parts of the body if not treated. This spreading of cancer cells is called metastasis. There are two major types of lung cancer: small cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. The cancer cells of each type grow and spread in different ways, and they are treated differently.

Common cold and allergy medicines contain pseudoephedrine and can make it difficult to fall asleep. Antidepressants and medications to treat ADHD, high blood pressure or Parkinson’s disease can also cause insomnia.Drinking alcohol before bedtime can cause frequent awakenings during the night. Insomnia also can occur if you suddenly stop using a sleeping pill.Caffeine and other stimulants can prevent you from falling asleep. Stimulants also cause frequent awakenings during the night.Some people are sensitive to certain foods and may be allergic to them. This can result in insomnia and disrupted sleep.

Often a mental health disorder will be found after a complaint of insomnia. Depression is one of the most common mental illnesses in the United States and a frequent cause of insomnia. People with depression often have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep. Difficulty falling asleep is also common in people with anxiety disorders. Other mood disorders such as bipolar disorder may also cause sleep problems.

With EBUS, the bronchoscope has an ultrasound probe and biopsy needle on the end. The ultrasound probe uses sound waves to create a visual map of structures abutting the air pipes, allowing the pulmonologist to exactly identify the location of the abnormality in question.

The Ventilation-Perfusion scan is a test performed in the hospital as an outpatient by Nuclear Medicine. This test compares the distribution of air in the lungs to the distribution of blood flow to the lungs.
Computed Tomography
A CT scan is a more advanced imaging study as compared to an x-ray. Whereas a chest x-ray provides a flat, 2-dimensional image of the chest, the CT scan uses computers to render a 3-dimensional image of the chest and its internal structures, including the lungs, major blood vessels, lymph nodes, and other important structures in the chest.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy may be taken by pill, or it may be put into the body by a needle in the vein or muscle. Chemotherapy is called a systemic treatment because the drug enters the bloodstream, travels through the body, and can kill cancer cells outside the lungs.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy uses X-rays or other high-energy rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiation may come from a machine outside the body (external radiation therapy) or from putting materials that produce radiation (radioisotopes) through thin plastic tubes in the area where the cancer cells are found (internal radiation therapy). Radiation therapy can be used alone or in addition to surgery and/or chemotherapy.

Treatment may not be needed if sarcoidosis is only affecting the lungs and nearby lymph nodes. Since sarcoidosis often disappears on its own at this stage, doctors are more likely just to monitor the patient and recommend physical therapy.
