Born and raised in Southern Illinois, Dr. Sara Schmitz completed her Bachelorâ€™s Degree in Chemistry at the Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and her Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Missouri â€“ St. Louis College of Optometry. Dr. Schmitz joined Overland Optical Family Eye Care in 2007 and has a special interest in primary care optometry, with an emphasis on ocular disease.Â This includes prescribing eyeglasses and fitting contact lenses as well as the treatment of ocular allergies, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.Â She also specializes in foreign body removal and surgery co-management.Â Dr. Schmitz is a member of the American Optometric Association, the Missouri Optometric Association, the St. Louis Optometric Society, and the Heart of America Contact Lens Society.

Glaucoma
A tonometry test, more commonly referred to as an eye pressure test, checks the amount of intraocular pressure (IOP) in your eye. Because a high level of pressure can be a sign of Glaucoma, the eye pressure test is an essential part of any comprehensive eye exam. This test involves eye drops which numb the eye, followed by a small device that the doctor uses to gently touch the eye, checking pressure levels.
Macular Degeneration
In addition, your eyes are built with natural filters against many damaging elements, yet these filters do not protect adequately against blue light that emanates from the sun or from artificial sources. Prolonged exposure to blue light rays may contribute to macular degeneration or cause retinal damage, both of which threaten your vision.

Computed Tomography
Similar to a traditional CT scan, an OCT Scan (Optical Coherence Tomography) checks for eye diseases by examining the layers of your retina and optic nerve. This test involves the use of a laser with light to provide the doctor with detailed, colored images of the retina. There is no radiation and the test is painless and non-invasive.
