There are two types of pancreatitis: acute and chronic. Acute pancreatitis is characterized by sudden attacks, which can be very intense and life-threatening, resulting in several complications. Once treated, a complete recovery is common. Chronic pancreatitis occurs when damage to the pancreas continues. Symptoms are similar to the acute version but much more severe. Pancreatic dysfunction may occur resulting in poor digestion and weight loss.
Colonoscopy
Dr. Tenner has been my gastroenterologist for a few years now, and I am grateful for his kindness, and caring nature. From the first moment that I met with Dr. Tenner I felt that I could trust him. Everything that was said in the rooms was kept confidential, and the procedures that he performed on me were painless, the results were to the point with no side talk. I appreciate the bluntness of my treatment, and the ability to have a word in what needs to be done. The office staff, and the referrals were completed on time, and everyone was so pleasant. The office setting made me feel safe and comfortable. The handouts that I was given, helped me understand in depth of what I needed to do, and the dietician was extremely helpful. I will definitely tell my mother to come see Dr. Tenner when the time comes. Usually I dread my next appointments, but I look forward to coming back in five years for my repeat colonoscopy.

This procedure is used to examine the appearance of colon using a thin, flexible viewing tube (colonoscope), which is attached to a viewing monitor. Colonoscopies are used when symptoms appear that suggest colon diseases. This procedure is your best alternative in order to evaluate the cause of blood in the stool, abdominal pain, diarrhea, change in bowel habits and abnormalities found during x-rays or CAT Scan. Some patients that have a family history of colon disease may be recommended to schedule regular colonoscopies because they are at a greater risk of developing polyps or colon cancer.

The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) has recognized 32 endoscopy units as part of its program specifically dedicated to promoting quality in endoscopy, in all settings where it is practiced in the United States. The ASGE Endoscopy Unit Recognition Program honors endoscopy units that follow the ASGE guidelines on privileging, quality assurance, endoscopy reprocessing and CDC infection control guidelines. To date, 166 endoscopy units have been recognized by ASGE.

Gallstones are a potential complication of pancreatitis. Physicians will use ultrasound viewing techniques to detect them and surgery will be performed to remove them. Depending on the severity of the disease, gallstones will either be removed immediately, as with mild cases, or within a month or if the attack is severe and the pancreas needs time to heal. Computerized Axial Topography (CAT) Scan can be used to determine the extent of the condition. This information is important for determining when the gallstones should be removed. After removal of gallstones, the inflammation should disappear and the patient should make a full recovery. Individuals who have recovered from acute pancreatitis should avoid alcohol and large meals.
MRI
Exclusion of "non-intestinal" conditions may also be made, if symptoms suggest such diseases, using Computerized Axial Topography (CAT or CT) Scan or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). These procedures are not common in diagnosing IBS.
X-Rays
Computed Tomography
The most common and sensitive form of diagnosis for gallstones is ultrasonography. This procedure uses sound waves, which bounce of organs and gallstones, to form an image on a viewing screen. Other procedures used to diagnose gallstones are Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT or CT Scan), Magnetic Resonance Cholangiogram (to view blocked bile ducts), Cholescintigraphy (HIDA Scan), which injects a radioactive chemical into the gallbladder, stimulating its contraction in order to diagnose abnormal contraction or obstruction.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy: destroys cancer cells by using special drugs-either one or a combination. These drugs may be given via injection or by mouth. Chemotherapy is a systemic treatment which means the drugs will flow through your blood to all parts of your body. For patients undergoing chemotherapy, the side effects depend on the types of drugs used and the dosages given. However, in general, chemotherapy mostly affects the cells in the body which divide rapidly; therefore, chemotherapy patients may experience a wide variety of effects. These include: infection, loss of hair, poor appetite, nauseam vomiting and mouth sores. Patients may bruise and bleed easily and have less energy.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation Therapy: bombards cancer-infected areas with high energy rays to stop cancer cells from growing. This treatment can be given externally using a machine or internally by placing radioactive material in or around the affected area. This treatment may also be used before surgery to decrease the size of the tumor. Patients undergoing radiation therapy often feel tired; however, patients are encouraged to remain active. Other side effects include: loss of hair and skin irritation. A "bronzing" of the skin may also occur in the treated area. It is important to keep the treated area out of the sun and to refrain from using creams or lotions without the consent of your physician. Try to avoid wearing clothing that rubs against the affected areas. Some patients may also experience diarrhea and discomfort while urinating.

Laparoscopy
"Open" surgery: In cases where laparoscopy is not an option, a 5"-8" incision is made in the abdomen, through which the gallbladder is removed. Recovery takes much longer: approximately 2-7 days in the hospital followed by several weeks at home. 5% of operations are of this kind.

Helicobacter pyloridus (H. Pylori): Scientists now believe that H. Pylori bacteria is a major cause of peptic ulcers. It is unclear what role H. Pylori plays in ulcer formation; however, billions of people are infected with this bacteria, 10-15% of which develop ulcers. Antibiotic treatment eliminating the presence of this bacteria has proven to be effective for healing ulcers and preventing their recurrence.
