Laser Eye Surgery

Cataracts

Cataract Surgery
Currently, the only option to improve vision in patients with significant cataracts is surgery. Dr. Gary Fishman and Dr. Simon Wu at Vision Center of NY are nationally certified ophthalmologists who specialize in premium cataract surgery in the Bronx, NY area.

Internal Medicine
Dr. Wu graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Computer Science from Brooklyn College, City University of New York (CUNY). He then attended medical school at New York University School of Medicine where he obtained his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. This was followed by a one year internship in Internal Medicine at NYU Medical Center. Dr. Wu then completed his Ophthalmology residency training at New York Medical College, serving as Chief Resident in his final year. This was followed by a one year fellowship in cornea, external diseases, and refractive surgery at the Boston Eye Group, where he also spent time at the prestigious Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of systemic diabetes disease and is characterized by weakening of the blood vessels that supply nourishment to the retina, the light-sensing layer of the eye. When these weak vessels leak, swell or develop new branches, vision loss occurs.

Ultrasound
Cataract surgery is an outpatient surgery that can be done at a hospital, or more commonly in an ambulatory surgery center. There is no overnight stay involved. Mild sedation is given and the eye is numbed either with eye drops alone or with an injection around the eye. In either case, the patient does not feel the surgery. A small incision is made in the cornea, the clear part of the eye, and an ultrasound probe is placed in the eye. The cataract is then broken up by ultrasound waves, and the small pieces are removed from the eye using the probe. A lens implant, or intraocular lens is then placed into the space formerly occupied by the cataract. Most times the wound is closed without sutures. The surgery usually takes only 15 to 30 minutes. The patient is then discharged home with an eye shield.

Ulcer
A corneal ulcer is an erosion or exposed sore on the surface of the cornea. Corneal ulcers are most commonly caused by germs. Other causes of corneal ulcers include viruses, injury and inadequate eyelid closure. Corneal ulcers are common in people who wear contact lenses, especially if they wear them overnight.
Fungus
The most common infection related to contact lens use is keratitis, an infection of the cornea (the clear, round dome covering they eye’s iris and pupil). Keratitis can be caused my many things, including herpes, bacteria, fungus and microbes. It is not transmitted from person to person, but fungal keratitis is more common in warmer climates.
