X-rays
Oral Cancer Screening
Although it is rare for a child to develop oral cancer, it’s not impossible. Early detection is essential for successful treatment, which is why we will perform a quick and painless scan each time they visit for a regular checkup. We will look for abnormalities, lumps, and anything that appears “off” or out of place. Should we discover anything of concern, we will refer you and your child to a local specialist who will perform additional tests to determine if an official diagnosis is necessary.

Teeth Cleaning
We understand it can be difficult finding a time and day to get routine checkups done for your teen. However, there are few dental treatments more important than dental exams and cleanings as they are the best way outside of brushing and flossing to avoid tooth decay and gum disease. Our office can also catch the early signs of bite abnormalities and oral cancer. During their cleaning, we’ll remove plaque deposits and tartar, then recommend suggestions to improve their at-home routine if needed.
Fluoride Treatment
It is true that children are highly susceptible to tooth decay. Their minimal dexterity and inability to properly clean all areas of their smile, in addition to the desire to eat nothing but sugar, put them at high risk for cavities. The good news is that your child’s pediatric dentist in Birmingham can recommend fluoride treatments during their regular dental checkups and cleanings. This quick and painless process takes only minutes and serves to better protect against tooth decay as well as strengthen their tooth enamel from serious damage.
Dental Sealants
As a parent, you’ll need to be responsible for brushing and flossing your child’s teeth for the first few years. Eventually, your role will only be to observe but until then, it’s important that all of your child’s teeth are properly cleaned each morning and night. This device is used to hold the natural space open. Without a space maintainer, the teeth can tilt toward the empty space and cause permanent teeth to erupt misaligned. That’s why the way your child cares for their primary teeth plays a critical role in how their permanent teeth develop.

Fillings
While it would be nice to not have to worry about your child developing cavities, sometimes they find a way, even with the best at-home oral hygiene. If your teen does develop a cavity, tooth-colored fillings can prevent them from getting worse and keep their teeth looking natural. The composite resin we use can be easily color-matched to fill the tooth as well as avoid the setbacks that come with using traditional silver amalgam fillings.
Resin Composite
Composite resins come in many different shades and provide better matching of shades to the natural color of your child’s teeth.
Veneers
Often, cosmetic bonding is used to improve the appearance of your child’s teeth and enhance your child’s smile. The composite material, either a plastic or resin, is bonded to an existing but damaged tooth. Unlike veneers or crowns, composite bonding removes little, if any, of the original tooth structure.
Crowns
For children, a stainless steel crown is commonly used to fit over a primary tooth that has been damaged because of severe decay or traumatic injury. The crown encapsulates the tooth and protects it from further damage. When the primary tooth falls out, the crown just comes out with it. Stainless steel crowns are preferred for children's teeth because they are less costly than custom-designed crowns and placing them doesn’t require multiple appointments.

Orthodontics
Dr. Angelica R. Rohner’s undergraduate degree is in early childhood development and education. After two years of teaching special education, she realized her passion for helping children. Dr. Rohner graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Dentistry with a D.M.D. degree, and then completed a two-year internship/residency program in Pediatric Dentistry at the Children's Hospital of Alabama and the University of Alabama at Birmingham, receiving an advanced degree in Pediatric Dentistry. Within this residency, Dr. Rohner also trained in orthodontics of the growing child.
Braces
With recontouring, a small amount of tooth enamel is removed to reshape or resize a tooth. Recontouring is often necessary after children’s orthodontic braces have been removed or in the case of traumatic injury. Dr. Rohner uses a number of delicate instruments, such as a sanding disc for the surface of teeth and a small piece of sandpaper for in between teeth, to shape and smooth the tooth. Lastly, the tooth is polished for a natural-looking sheen.

Teeth Whitening
Our teeth naturally darken over time. Changes in the color of teeth can also be caused by other factors like consuming certain food and beverages.
