Vaccination
We provide off-site veterinary services for a number of our clients. Contact us to book a “barn day” for wellness exams, vaccinations, nutrition consultations, and routine diagnostics. We can also provide integrative therapies and reproductive services at your farm.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Our veterinarians are experienced in the management of ocular (eye) infections; immune-mediated, corneal, and uveal diseases; glaucoma; and equine eye conditions requiring surgical care. BEMC is well-equipped with all necessary advanced ophthalmology equipment, which includes a Heine hand-held slit lamp biomicroscope, a Tono-Pen tonometer, direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy, and specialized ophthalmic surgical instruments. We also carry equine contact lenses for non-healing corneal ulcers.

BEMC’s veterinary team is highly trained and experienced in diagnosing and treating equine lameness. Successful outcomes require thorough physical exams, lameness evaluations (sometimes under saddle), and knowledge of current therapies and treatments, all of which we offer.

Equine internal medicine encompasses all things not involving surgery or orthopedic work. This leaves problems involving the lungs, heart, brain, spinal cord, intestinal tract, urinary tract (kidneys and bladder), internal organs (liver, pancreas, and spleen), and endocrine system. These problems can include organ failure, bacterial and fungal infections, infectious diseases, internal parasites, cancers, toxicities, equine metabolic syndrome, insulin dysregulation, pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID, or equine Cushing’s disease), and congenital problems. Some of the more common cases we see include severe pneumonia, liver disease, kidney disease, and neurologic problems. Our neonatal intensive care unit falls under the umbrella of internal medicine as well.

All surgical cases are monitored by a veterinarian or technician specially trained in equine anesthesia. We closely monitor horses’ blood pressure, heart rate, EKG, oxygenation, and other variables during surgical procedures.
Kidney Disease Treatment

Wound and Fracture Care
Deep lacerations, bone fractures, colic, severe infectious diseases, and acute laminitis. These are just some of the issues horse owners face that require immediate and often life-saving veterinary intervention. As the region’s only referral equine hospital equipped with an equine intensive care unit (ICU), we’re available on-call around the clock for emergencies.

Ophthalmic Surgery
As Central Oregon’s only full-service equine surgical center, we offer advanced equine surgical services, including colic surgery, fracture repair, arthroscopy, distal check ligament desmotomy, palmar digital neurectomy, tibial neurectomy, cryptorchidectomy, ophthalmic surgery, sinus surgery, upper respiratory surgery, cancerous growth removals, and many other procedures.
Veterinary Surgery
Abdominal surgery is most commonly performed to treat surgical colics. In most cases, colic surgery is an emergency, life-saving procedure performed to treat displaced or twisted intestines or severe impactions. We are one of only two institutions in Oregon offering this advanced procedure, and our surgeons and technical staff are on call 24/7. Colic surgery requires a well-coordinated team of four to five people and round-the-clock monitoring for several days postoperatively.
