Founded in 1980, Louisiana Commission for the Deaf promotes, coordinates and facilitates public and private services for individuals with visual and hearing impairments. The commission advocates for the needs and rights of people with speech disabilities. Louisiana Commission for the Deaf has more than 5 community-based regional centers that offer document and telecommunication interpretation, advocacy and referral services for more than 40,000 people annually. It offers telephones, telebraillers and amplification equipment. The commission is a part of the Louisiana Department of Social Services, Which offers child and foster care, independent living, rehabilitation and food services.
