Overall

Everyone in the office was friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. I was able to see the Dr. and get my results of the mammogram before I left their office. I also received a thermogram, chest X-Ray, and lab work to check for tumor markers during this appt. I felt I received a very thorough exam.

Ovarian Cancer
Although elevated CA 125 tumor antigen is most often related to ovarian cancer, we have found that the CA 125 tumor marker can also be elevated in recurrent breast cancer.
Prostate Cancer
Through our own intensive research, we have made great advances. We have discovered that certain biological factors will tell us how fast a tumor is growing. We have also developed and patented a vaccine used in the treatment of breast cancer and one for the treatment of prostate cancer and other solid tumors.

Ultrasound
A woman should be able to get the results of her mammogram and ultrasound at the time of her visit. This clinic provides that service for our patient’s peace of mind before leaving us. There should not be a 2-3-week delay in receiving test results of this kind.
MRI
The Elliott Breast Clinic focuses on early detection of breast cancer using multiple modalities including mammogram, thermogram, ultrasound and a thorough breast exam. We also offer a contrast enhanced diagnostic mammogram of which has been shown to be comparable to an MRI in women who have dense breast tissue and are at high risk of developing breast cancer. The results of each of these tests is given to the patient at the time of the visit.
X-Rays
Mammography
Tests are conducted in a comfortable, attractive environment, separate from the treatment and research areas of the facility to put patients at ease. Results are explained thoroughly while the patient is still in the Center. If treatment is needed, a patient will usually know her options before leaving the Center on the day of her tests. Therefore, the anxiety caused by waiting for the mammography report and recalls for repeat mammography do not occur at The Mastology Center.
Chemotherapy
The typical drugs used in cancer chemotherapy are very toxic and thus cause many undesirable side effects. We have found that by binding chemotherapeutic agents to transferrin we can target the drug to the cancer and deliver effective chemotherapy without the undesirable side effects.

General Surgery
Catherine C Baucom M.D., Ph.D. is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She earned her Ph.D. in Neuroscience and M.D. from the Tulane University School of Medicine. After completing her general surgery residency at Tulane University School of Medicine, she joined Dr. Elliott’s Breast Center. She has devoted her surgical practice to overall breast health. Dr. Baucom understands on a personal level the impact breast cancer can have on families. She is committed to early detection and treatment of breast cancer and enjoys educating patients about their overall breast health.

Plastic Surgeons

Breast Reconstruction
The most effective way to treat breast cancer is to detect the tumor early and remove the cancer before it has spread. For years Dr. Elliott has lectured on the vital importance of early detection of breast cancer not only to cure the patient but also to preserve a woman’s breast whenever possible, in order that her emotional recovery after cancer will be as complete as her physical recovery. Early detection can often allow the surgeon to perform a lumpectomy, a procedure where only the tumor and a small amount of normal tissue immediately surrounding the tumor can be removed. If mastectomy (removal of the entire breast) cannot be avoided, the Center works with plastic and reconstructive surgeons to provide cosmetic breast reconstruction as an alternative. This can help to give the patient positive feelings about herself and her life after breast cancer. In patients with minimal disease a new procedure called sentinel node biopsy can often replace axillary node dissection and its side effects. By biopsying only the first node in the drainage of the lymph system from the area of the breast tumor the surgeon can greatly diminish the morbidity associated with standard axillary node dissection. Chemotherapy, when indicated is performed at the Center by members of the patient’s breast care team.

Useful in determining the nature of a mass, whether it is a cyst or tumor and can assist with the biopsy of abnormal lesions.
