Cryotherapy
Squamous cell carcinoma: This is the second most common type of skin cancer. These cancers also begin in the epidermis. Radiation therapy can be used to treat squamous cell cancers that start on the skin and sometimes nearby lymph nodes with or without surgery. Other common treatments include surgery, chemotherapy, cryotherapy and photodynamic therapy.

Dr. Hudes has special expertise in brachytherapy for prostate, breast and gynecologic malignancies. He is the principal investigator at St. Agnes Hospital for the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG, now known as NRG). In addition to the Saint Agnes Hospital Cancer Institute, Dr. Hudes also works with Chesapeake Urology Associates (CUA) at The Prostate Center and also performs prostate brachytherapy procedures at Summit Ambulatory Surgery Centers.

Lung Cancer
Non-small cell lung cancer and small cell lung cancer are the two main types of lung cancer. Lung cancer usually begins in one lung. If left untreated, it can spread to lymph nodes or other parts of the chest, including the other lung. Lung cancer can also metastasize (or spread) throughout the body to the bones, brain, liver or other organs.

Thyroid Cancer
Certain cancers may be treated by swallowing radioactive pills or receiving radioactive fluids in the vein (intravenous). This type of treatment is called systemic radiation therapy because the medicine goes to the entire body. For example, radioactive iodine (I-131) capsules are given to treat some types of thyroid cancer. Another example is the use of intravenous radioactive material to treat pain due to cancer that has spread to the bone. Radiolabeled antibodies are monoclonal antibodies with radioactive particles attached. These antibodies are designed to attach themselves directly to the cancer cell and damage it with small amounts of radiation.

Ultrasound
These treatments are designed to deliver a very high dose of radiation to the tumor by inserting radioactive seeds directly into the prostate gland under ultrasound guidance while the patient is under anesthesia. Isotopes of iodine or palladium are most commonly used. The seeds are approximately four millimeters long and less than a millimeter in diameter. In certain situations, both prostate brachytherapy and external radiation may be recommended to combat the tumor.
MRI
A magnetic resonance imaging scan is an imaging study that uses a magnetic field and a computer to create detailed pictures of the body.
Radiology
Radiation oncologists have completed at least four years of college, four years of medical school, one year of general medical training, and four years of residency or specialty training in radiation oncology. They have extensive training in cancer medicine and the safe use of radiation to treat disease. If they pass a special examination, they are certified by the American Board of Radiology. You should ask if your doctor is board certified.

Mammography
Following his internal medicine residency, he completed his residency in Radiation Oncology at the University of Pennsylvania where he was an American Cancer Society Fellow and served as chief resident. After staff appointments in the Departments of Radiation Oncology at the University of Pennsylvania and the Fox Chase Cancer Center, Dr. Brookland relocated to Baltimore where he currently chairs the Department of Radiation Oncology at Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC). Also at GBMC he has been a member of the Institutional Review Board, the Medical Board, Chair of GBMC Foundation, and member of the HealthCare Board. Clinical areas of research have included published papers in the areas of breast and genito-urinary cancers, and he has served as Principal Investigator in a number of trials. Dr. Brookland is a member of the Baltimore County Medical Association Board of Governors, and chaired its Peer Review Committee. He has been a member of the Medical Advisory Committee for the Governor's Cancer Commission, Maryland Board of Physician Quality Assurance, and the Breast Cancer Committee for the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. He served as Chairman of the Board for the American Cancer Society (ACS) Maryland, Mid-Atlantic and South Atlantic Divisions and as a member of the ACS National Board of Directors. Additionally, Dr Brookland is Vice Chair of the American Joint Commission on Cancer and on the Executive Committee for the Commission on Cancer. He has testified in Annapolis for tobacco control legislation and mammography coverage. He has been a guest lecturer at Towson University and has appeared on area TV and radio stations, and national cable programs including CNN.
Computed Tomography
Before beginning treatment, you will be scheduled for a planning session to map out the area of treatment. This procedure is called a simulation. Simulation involves having a CT scan. Tiny tattoo-like marks made on your skin help the radiation therapist precisely position you for daily treatment.
Chemotherapy
An important concept in treating head and neck cancers is organ preservation. An organ preservation approach uses radiation and sometimes chemotherapy to shrink or completely eliminate the tumor. This can allow some patients to avoid the need for surgery.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation oncologists use image guided radiation therapy, or IGRT, to help better deliver the radiation to the cancer since tumors can move between treatments due to differences in organ filling or movements while breathing.

It also sometimes called according to the name of the radiation machine used for the treatment (Gamma Knife, Linac Scalpel, Cyberknife etc.)
