Dental Examination
Periodontal disease is diagnosed by your dentist during a periodontal examination. The clinical team, including the dentist, assistant, and dental hygienist, are involved in collecting the information and synthesizing it into a proper diagnosis. Having an appropriate gum disease diagnosis in Littleton or Aurora, Colorado with the Periodontal Associates team is crucial in determining the types of therapies that are needed and understanding the risk of disease progression.
X-rays
Dental X-rays produce a low level of radiation and are considered safe. Our Aurora / Littleton dental X-ray team always takes necessary precautions to limit the patient’s exposure to radiation when taking dental X-rays. These precautions include using lead apron shields to protect the body and using modern, fast digital X-rays that reduces the exposure time of each X-ray thereby reducing radiation exposure.
Oral Cancer Screening
Examine the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer and/or infection.

Teeth Cleaning
The word “periodontal” means “around the tooth.” Periodontal disease attacks the gums and the bone that support the teeth. Plaque is a sticky film produced by bacteria to help the bacteria attach to teeth. If plaque is not removed with adequate brushing and flossing, it turns into calculus (tartar). No amount of brushing/flossing can remove calculus; therefore we rely on regular dental cleanings for its removal. When plaque and calculus are not removed, they release toxins and create inflammation that destroys the supporting gums and bone.
Fluoride Treatment
Prevention also includes regular dental exams, cleanings, and x-rays. Sealants and fluoride are also great preventive treatments that help protect the teeth.

Fillings
Crowns
Exposed roots can be sensitive to cold or be aesthetically unappealing. It also indicates that bone has been lost where the recession has progressed. Root surfaces are softer tooth structure than the crown/cap of the tooth and therefore more susceptible to cavities or erosion.
Bridges
Following the initial examination at Periodontal Associates, our Littleton / Aurora multiple tooth dental implant patients should allocate time for 4-5 additional visits until the final fixed bridge is permanently placed. After this appointment you should not experience discomfort and return to work the next day, If you do experience discomfort it will be treated immediately with an ordinary analgesic.

Root Canal Treatment
Essential for detection of tooth decay, tumors, cysts, and supportive bone loss. X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions and root canal infections.

Deep Cleaning
Gingivitis is the mildest and most common type of gum disease. It is a result of the bacteria present in your mouth and causes the gums to be swollen, inflamed, and infected. It can be common in people of all ages. Fortunately, gingivitis does not lead to bone loss and is reversible with periodontal treatment. A common treatment would be either a professional cleaning along with good home maintenance (brushing and flossing) or with a deep cleaning, commonly referred to as scaling and root planing.

Gum Surgery

Tooth Extractions
Any additional procedures needed. In some cases, patients need additional procedures, such as bone grafts, in order to be able to receive dental implants. Ridge Augmentation
When teeth are lost, the jawbone will shrink (atrophy). Implants require bone to surround them in order to have long-term success. Thus, we use a ridge augmentation procedure to widen the bone to fully support future implants.
Bone Grafting
Bone morphogenic protein (BMP-2 or Infuse®) is a product that can be used with bone grafting to help form bone when there is a severe loss of jawbone.
