Founded in 1972, the Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs, maintains and improves roads and bridges throughout the state of Georgia. It has a network of consultants and contractors and works with federal, state and local agencies and organizations. The department maintains a staff of more than 6,000 employees. The Georgia Department of Transportation provides planning and financial support services for other modes of transportation, such as mass transit and airports. It also offers administrative support to the State Road and Tollway Authority and the Georgia Rail Passenger Authority. The department is responsible for waterways, including intercoastal waterway and the Savannah and Brunswick ports. The Georgia Department of Transportation provides Georgia 511, a free phone service that offers traffic and travel information, including traffic conditions, incidents, lane closures and delays due to inclement weather.
