Dr. Wray is a native of Atlanta and is a third generation physician practicing Neurology/ Neurosurgery at Piedmont Hospital. He is a devoted husband and loving father to his wife and three children. He is on the session serving as an Elder at Peachtree Presbyterian Church, and is on the executive board of Safehouse Outreach Ministry, and serves on the alumni board at Pace Academy. Outside the operating room, Dr. Wray pursues his outside interests including being a multi-instrument musician, licensed pilot, and an avid outdoorsman involved in hiking, fishing, hunting, and water sports. His spare time is spent in the mountain lakes of North Georgia with his family.

Ultrasound
Physical therapy incorporates therapeutic exercises, and “hands on therapies” such as ultrasound, massage, heat or ice packs, and electrical stimulation. Therapeutic exercise programs begin slowly to acclimate the patient to stretching and strengthening routines. The patient is usually provided with a home exercise program to continue on a regular basis. A strong and agile spine is one step toward preventing future injury. “Hands-on” therapies work to decrease inflammation, muscle spasm and pain. In addition, manual therapies of this type increase circulation to the site of injury and facilitate healing. Such therapies as chiropractic, ultrasound, massage, acupuncture and TENS are appropriate options.
MRI
Diagnostic tests. Generally, we start with x-rays, which allow us to rule out other problems such as tumors and infections. An MRI will be taken to enable the physicians to assess the degree of disc degeneration, especially any loss of disc height. In some cases we also use a test called a discography to confirm the diagnosis. This test involves injecting contrast dye into the affected disc (or discs) to create a clearer image.
Radiology
Dr. Johnson is a member of several prestigious organizations including the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves and the Georgia Neurosurgical Society. She serves on the Executive Committee of the Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves and on the American College of Radiology as a neurosurgery and spine expert.
X-Rays
Computed Tomography
CT Scans are used for a more detailed look at the spinal cord or discs. CT or CAT Scans produce black, white, and grey or color images with detailed views of soft tissue, bone, and organs.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy treats and controls cancer by using drugs that destroy cancer cells by interfering with cell growth and its ability to reproduce (cell cycle). There are many types of chemotherapy drugs that may be combined with other treatments.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation Therapy: Radiation therapy can help to control disease by killing and eliminating cancer cells, shrinking a tumor, or preventing growth. Radiation targets the DNA of a malignant cell because it is more susceptible to radiation than a normal cell. Altering a cell’s DNA interferes with its ability to divide and grow. Radiation therapy is available as an external or internal treatment, or both. Internal radiation therapy is also called interstitial radiation and involves placing a radioactive substance in the body. The radioactive substance is sealed in a small container such as a capsule or tube.

General Surgery
Dr. Wray earned his M.D. degree at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA. While in Augusta, Dr. Wray served as president of his medical school class for 4 years and was inducted into Alpha Epsilon Delta National Medical Honor Society. At Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, NC, he completed a general surgery internship, residency, and Chief Residency in Neurological Surgery. While a resident, Dr. Wray was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society, received the Resident Teaching Award, and was the Silver Medal recipient for Clinical Research.

Dr. Kerolus completed his neurosurgical training at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago where he focused on the treatment of cranial pathologies such as trigeminal neuralgia, brain and spinal cord tumors and minimally invasive spine surgery. He then completed the prestigious Adult and Pediatric Comprehensive Orthopedic Spine Fellowship at Columbia University/New York-Presbyterian with a focus on spinal deformity and scoliosis surgery. Having been trained in both neurosurgery and orthopedic spine surgery, Dr. Kerolus is able to individualize surgical treatment options for his patients.
Whiplash
The frequency of this condition is closely related to our lifestyles. For example, awkward positions such as cradling the phone between the ear and shoulder, sitting in a chair that offers no support, or working at an ill-designed computer station can contribute to neck strain. Another example is whiplash, which is a type of neck strain. It may develop after an automobile accident when the head is suddenly and quickly forced forward and backward (excessive flexion and extension) during a rear-end collision. Other causes of whiplash include injuries during sports or biking.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Spinal fusion techniques are primarily used in cases where traditional treatment methods fall short. Our facility employs three fusion treatments, PLIF, ALIF, & TLIF, depending on the severity and type of condition. The spinal fusion techniques can be successfully completed through minimally invasive surgery techniques for a speedy recovery. PLIF, ALIF and TLIF are surgical procedures in which the spine doctor fuses two or more bones together. Surgeons typically perform these procedures to help patients with spondylolisthesis, scoliosis, severe disc degeneration, or spinal fractures.

Physical Therapy
While surgery is a safe, effective treatment for many conditions affecting the brain and spine, some conditions respond well to non-surgical treatments. Non-surgical treatments include physical therapy, interventional pain management, pharmacological pain management, and spinal bracing.
Slipped Disc
Most patients have heard the phrase “slipped disc”, “ruptured disc” or “disc popped out”. While these are certainly descriptive terms, they can be somewhat misleading. What these terms are referring to is a disc herniation. Disc herniations are common, especially in the low back (i.e. lumbar spine), and at our practice we treat this condition regularly.

Physical therapy helps build strength, flexibility, and endurance while providing an opportunity to learn proper body mechanics to keep the spine stable and prevent injuries. Physical therapy includes therapeutic exercises, orthopedic manipulation and mobilization, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), and myofascial release techniques. Physical therapy may include ultrasound, ice and heat therapies to improve or maintain functional abilities associated with the activities of daily living. Healing through physical therapy, or functional rehabilitation, is one of our preferred non-operative treatment solutions that involve passive therapies, including Orthopaedic Manipulation, Aquatic Therapy and Exercise, and Biomechanics.
