Prior to surgery children are generally examined by the physician for overall health and most have had a CT scan or MRI to determine the presence of the components of the middle and inner ear to see if there is adequate structure for reconstruction. Hearing tests are generally done at birth and then every six months. Speech evaluations are also performed at two months and every six months thereafter.
Computed Tomography
It is usually possible to restore hearing in Microtia patients with aural atresia, as long as the inner ear is present. Patients should have regular monitoring of their hearing and a high resolution 3-D CT scan of the temporal bones to show if the middle ear structures can be surgically corrected. This important test determines if the patient is a candidate for hearing correction surgery in addition to the reconstruction of the outer ear.

Cyst Removal
Sebaceous cysts are the most common type of cysts seen in the ear. They are bulging, sac-like collections of dead skin cells and oils produced by oil glands in the skin. An ear cyst may be found behind the ear, in the ear canal, on the scalp or in the earlobe. Ear Surgery
Most children do not experience any significant amount of discomfort with any of the stages of microtia ear surgery. Stage 1 is the most invasive stage involving hospitalization after the surgery. The surgery is done under general anesthesia and the patient is numbed with short-term and long-term acting anesthetics for comfort. These anesthetics will relieve most of the chest discomfort from the rib graft site immediately following surgery and the next day. Children are usually up and playing the second day after surgery. Any other discomfort is usually managed quite easily with over-the-counter pain medications.
Otolaryngology
Dr. Jones uses careful excision to remove an ear pit, restoring its proper form and preventing future complications.
