Dr. Gwynn has owned Atlanta Neurology for over three decades, and he has held many leadership positions in Atlanta medicine, including Chairman of Internal Medicine at Northside Hospital of Atlanta; Chief of Neurology at both Northside Hospital and Emory St. Joseph’s Hospital; Director of the Stroke Programs at Northside and Emory St. Joseph’s hospitals; President of the Atlanta Clinical Society; President and Chairman of the Board of the Medical Association of Atlanta serving over 1,500 Atlanta-area physicians; and co-founder of NeuroTrials Research, a clinical research site.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
I currently see another practitioner at Dr. Gwynn's office for my migraines (Brandy Hughes) but was referred to get an EMG done at this office to see if my Carpal Tunnel had come back. Thankfully, they have a specialist that comes into their office about once a week to do this 20-minute nerve test. After completing this test, I was then immediately seen by Dr. Gwynn, who did a muscle test to see if I had any other Neurological issues going on with my upper extremities. He was so personable, compassionate, and knowledgeable. Recently, I have met with a few new doctors that did not have this incredible bedside manner and it really makes a difference. Also, their front office assistant gets you checked in quickly and is so welcoming. I can't say enough good things about this practice.
Multiple Sclerosis
Upper limb spasticity (continued tightness or stiffness of a muscle due to stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, or other neurological diseases)
Epilepsy
May be used to detect bone and vascular irregularities, brain tumors and cysts, brain damage from head injury, hydrocephalus, brain damage causing epilepsy, and encephalitis, among other disorders.

Psychiatry
Dr. Gwynn was born in Baltimore and grew up in Reston, Virginia. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry at The College of William and Mary and his MD at the University of Virginia (UVA); completed internal medicine residency at University of Alabama Birmingham; and then returned to UVA to complete his residency in neurology. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, which is the highest and most respected class of membership awarded to selected board certified neurologists who have demonstrated high achievements in teaching, clinical practice, administration, and/or research.

MRI
Uses computer-generated radio waves and a powerful magnetic field to produce detailed images of body tissues. Using different sequences of magnetic pulses, MRI can show anatomical images of the brain or spinal cord, measure blood flow, or reveal deposits of minerals such as iron.

Please arrange to have your medical records and any diagnostic images (MRIs, CT scans, x-rays) sent in advance or bring a copy with you. These records may be pertinent to our evaluation of your neurological system.

Botulinum toxin – Botox is a brand of botulinum toxin produced by a species of bacteria and that temporarily paralyzes muscles and has been proven to effectively block migraine pain, receiving FDA approval for chronic migraine prevention in 2010. Injections are given in a precise pattern at 90-day intervals to mitigate migraine occurrence.

Lesions
Matthews Gwynn, MD recently saw my 83-year-old mother after her ER brain scan revealed lesions. Though he did not have good news for our family, he was very kind and patient with both my mother, father, my sister, and I as we navigated a new diagnosis of dementia. There are no cures or treatments available, so his advice was not medical, it was more about life changes that all of us could expect. We are grateful for his professionalism and practical advice.
