The most important step a patient can take is to research doctors and facilities ahead of time. Many times, doctors who are accustomed to seeing patients from out of town have a system in place to accommodate this. The patient can gather their medical records, radiographic images and MRI’s, which can be mailed ahead of time for the surgeon’s review. If a patient is thinking about having their surgery performed out of town, a call to the surgeon, asking if this system is in place, can save some unnecessary expense. It is far better for patients to know ahead of time if they are an appropriate candidate for a procedure, rather than travel to the facility only to find out otherwise. A patient should also ask to speak to the billing department, as the center and surgeon either may not participate with their insurance or the specialized procedure may not be covered by their insurance. By talking to the staff, the patient can definitely get a sense of how experienced the office is in dealing with patients from out of town, which can help with the patient’s comfort level.

Dr. Buchanan was an orthopaedic foot and ankle consultant to The Washington Ballet and served as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the Georgetown University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He has lectured nationally and internationally on a diverse number of foot and ankle topics including minimally invasive foot and ankle surgery. Dedicated to teaching, Dr. Buchanan has been selected by multiple top local foot and ankle training programs to instruct residents on his advanced surgical techniques.

Dr. Clay Wellborn completed his undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, where he lettered all four years in swimming. He obtained his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. He completed his residency at George Washington University in Washington, DC, where he was Chief Resident. After nearly 10 years in practice in Santa Barbara, California, he returned to the DC area in 2007. Dr. Wellborn has wide experience in arthroscopic surgery, sports medicine and joint replacement. He enjoys spending time educating his patients so they can be active and informed participants in their treatment. He specializes in joint reconstruction of the hip, knee, and shoulder. He is trained in the modern techniques of minimally invasive, rapid recovery surgery, including outpatient joint replacement. Dr. Wellborn has worked with high school and college athletes for over 15 years as a team physician. He served as the Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Virginia Hospital Center from December 2016 until December 2020.

Dr. Cassie Root is a Northern Virginia native and attended Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. After graduating from Princeton University with Honors, Dr. Root attended Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, where she was awarded the prestigious, merit-based Canby Robinson Scholarship. In addition, she was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society. Dr. Root completed her orthopaedic surgery residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York—frequently chosen as the #1 Hospital for Orthopedic Surgery by US News & World Report. Additional fellowship training to specialize in Hand, Upper Extremity and Microvascular surgery was completed at Washington University in Saint Louis, MO. Dr. Root is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who focuses on problems of the upper extremity—the elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand. She treats disorders including sports injuries, arthritis, trauma, tendinitis and nerve problems. Welcoming both adult and pediatric patients, Dr. Root enjoys forming relationships with her patients while taking them through the entire process from initial diagnosis through conservative treatment, and when necessary, surgical treatment and post-operative therapy.

Drs. Ochiai and Paik recently published editorial commentaries in the September edition of Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery. Drs. Ochiai and Paik both serve on the editorial board for the journal. Arthroscopy is the pre-eminent journal for orthopedic surgeons focusing on arthroscopic procedures.

Dr. Wellborn at the Nirschl orthopedic center performed a total hip replacement for me in 2018. It was a life changing surgery and I could not be more grateful. Besides his expertise and long experience, he is thorough, patient, accessible to his patients and has a excellent bedside manners. The center’s staff are also wonderful. They always got back to me when I needed information or to complete forms. They are helpful, pleasant and professional. The care and attention given at this center is superb and I highly recommend it to patients seeking orthopedic care.

My name is Shirley A. Coyle. On 1/22/19 I underwent knee replacement surgery at the Virginia Hospital Center (VHC) under the direction of Dr. Clay Wellborn. I am 76 years old. This was my first hospital experience. Quite frankly I was scared beyond explanation regarding this type of surgery.
