Wound care is particularly important for those with diabetes. Itâ€™s possible that what appears to be a small wound could turn into more severe foot complications down the road if left untreated. Itâ€™s common for those with diabetes to experience neuropathy. Neuropathy is a type of nerve damage that affects the body and can cause you to lose feeling in the feet. If youâ€™re no longer experiencing feeling in your feet and a wound develops, itâ€™s very possible it may go unnoticed if you donâ€™t check your feet daily.

Bunions

Reconstructive Surgery
Dr. Bhakta completed his undergraduate work at The University of Texas at Austin, majoring in Biochemistry. He then pursued his podiatric medical degree at the California School of Podiatric Medicine at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, California and received his degree in 2018. Dr. Bhakta continued his post-graduate training by completing a residency at Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville, Texas that focused extensively on forefoot and rearfoot/ankle reconstructive surgery. Dr. Bhakta also participated in a short internship at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas that emphasized limb salvage and woundcare. He is currently an associate member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.

Corns
Corns and calluses are hard layers of skin that usually form due to friction. Generally, they will be in areas of the foot that are bearing weight, or areas that frequently rub against the shoe. Soft corns are typically found between the toes.
Calluses
Orthotics, as well as medical pads for corns and calluses that may develop due to your hammertoe, are recommended to help relieve discomfort. Light toe exercises may also be helpful for strengthening the muscles and mobility of your toes.

Physical Therapy
Possible conditions that may arise due to injury of the Achilles tendon include tears, ruptures, tendinitis, peritendinitis, tendinosis, tendinopathy, and bursitis. When trying to diagnose if one has issues with their Achilles tendon, a podiatrist will commonly check for any pain, swelling, or discoloration around the heel or lower leg area. Different treatments for issues concerning the Achilles tendon vary, but may include over-the-counter or prescribed pain relievers for intense discomfort, alternating ice and heat therapy, custom-made orthotics, physical therapy, and in severe cases, surgery. To help prevent injury to the Achilles tendon, itâ€™s recommended to regularly perform stretches involving the muscles of the lower leg.

General Podiatry
"I was diagnosed with "foot drop" in January 2016. (Foot drop develops when nerves are damaged causing the inability to dorsi flex the foot causing constant stumbling and falls. The neurologist told me there was nothing that could be done and I would have to live with it. Needless to say I left that office very discouraged. I decided to do my own research finding a surgery that could be done by a podiatrist. I visited Accent Podiatry the next week and was referred to Dr. Bhakta by Dr. Paschal. Dr. Bhakta did the surgery on 03/24/2016 and by 03/25/2016 I was able to dorsi-flex my foot and walk with a normal gait. I can't thank Dr. Bhakta enough for giving me back the ability to continue working, walking and exercising with a normal gait. If I've learned anything from this experience it's not to take one doctors opinion because if I had "given up" like the neurologist said my quality of life would be very different!! Achilles Tendonitis
There are many different causes of heel pain, including strains or sprains, tarsal tunnel syndrome, stress fractures, Achilles tendonitis, and heel bursitis. One of the most common causes of heel pain for children and teenagers specifically is Severâ€™s disease. Severâ€™s disease can develop due to overuse or repetitive microtrauma of the heel bone's growth plates. This condition is often seen among those who are active in sporting activities.
Ankle Sprain
There are many reasons that play a role in why a person may develop flat feet. For instance, certain genetic factors passed down from parents can lead to flat feet. Children may appear to have flat feet; however, their arches should develop over time. Having overall weak arches, a foot or ankle injury, arthritis, or a muscle or nervous system disease may all increase your likelihood of having flat feet. Tarsal coalition, a foot condition causing the fusion of bones in the feet, may also play a part in developing flat feet. Other common factors that are linked to flat feet include diabetes and obesity.

A bunion is a bony, painful swelling that is often formed on the first joint of the big toe. Bunions can be extremely painful due to the weight of all your body resting on it each time you take a step. Everyday activities, such as walking and wearing shoes, can cause you extreme discomfort if you have a bunion.

Diabetic Foot Care
Diabetes can affect the feet, and complications may ensue. Practicing a daily diabetic foot care routine is crucial in protecting the feet from this serious disease, and there are simple methods that can accomplish this. These can include washing and drying the feet daily, followed by inspecting the soles. Many people use a mirror to do this, or possibly have a family member or caregiver help them, if available. The skin can be kept smooth by using a good moisturizer, and it is important to refrain from applying it between the toes. It may be helpful to wear socks that have extra cushioning and do not have elastic tops. These types of socks are designed for diabetic patients and are also made from materials that can absorb moisture. Nerve damage, or neuropathy can often accompany diabetes, which is the inability to feel existing cuts or scrapes that are on the bottom of the feet. It is advised against walking barefoot at any time, which may help to protect the feet from incurring wounds. If you have diabetes, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help to manage this condition.
Flat Feet
When it comes to treating flat feet or fallen arches, itâ€™s suggested you get plenty of rest. Frequently ice the affected area to help reduce swelling. Performing daily stretches are a great way to loosen up your muscles and relieve strain. It may also be beneficial to look into orthotics or shoe inserts to help relieve the pain.
Hammertoes
Hammertoes can be identified by an abnormal bend in the middle joint of the toe. This abnormal bending can lead to added pressure on the toe when wearing shoes. It can also cause pain or discomfort when walking or running. Because hammertoes typically worsen overtime and become increasingly more rigid, itâ€™s recommended that you seek the help of a podiatrist for treatment options if you believe youâ€™re experiencing the symptoms of this deformity.

A heel spur is a bony protrusion that occurs on the heel. It is often confused with plantar fasciitis, which is inflammation of the plantar fascia ligament. When a heel spur is painful it can make it quite difficult to walk.

Foot Neuroma
Mortonâ€™s neuroma may develop when the tissue around one of the nerves leading to your foot begins to thicken. When this occurs, you may experience some discomfort as if you were standing on a pebble stuck in your shoe. Most symptoms will not appear outwardly and will be experienced in the form of a sharp, burning pain in the ball of the foot, as well as a stinging or burning feeling in the toes that may sometimes lead to numbness.

Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis affects the plantar regions of the foot, namely the heel, arch, and midfoot. When too much stress is put on the plantar fascia, or the connective tissue that stretches from the heel to the ball of your foot, inflammation, overtightening, and tearing may arise. This can cause foot pain. Because of plantar fasciitis, you may experience tearing with the first steps you take in the morning each day.
Podiatric Deformities
Some factors that contribute to the formation of Mortonâ€™s neuroma include wearing high heels or ill-fitting shoes that put extra pressure on your toes or the balls of your feet. There has also been a tie to the development of Mortonâ€™s neuroma and certain high-impact sporting activities. Activities you may want to avoid from participating in too frequently include both jogging and running. Too much repetitive trauma can cause a strain on the feet and increase the chances of developing a foot complication. Other sports that require the use of tightly worn shoes, such as skiing or rock climbing, may also increase your chances of getting Mortonâ€™s neuroma. Certain foot deformities can also lead to the development of Mortonâ€™s neuroma. Some of these deformities that increase the likelihood of getting this condition include bunions, hammertoes, and flat feet.

Dr. Bhakta completed his undergraduate work at the University of California at Riverside, majoring in Biochemistry with a minor in Mathematics. He then pursued his podiatric medical degree at the California School of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco, California and received his degree in 2000. Dr. Bhakta continued his post-graduate training by completing a podiatric internship at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York that involved hospital and community podiatric medicine. Dr. Bhakta also participated in a podiatric surgical residency at Englewood Hospital in Englewood, New Jersey. He is board certified in foot surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, a Diplomat of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, and is a Fellow of the American College of Foot-ankle Surgeons. In additon, he is Wound Care Certified (WCC) by the Woundcare Education Institute. Dr. Bhakta is actively involved in the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) and the Texas Podiatric Medical Association (TPMA) as well.
