Macular Degeneration
Dr. David Gendelman and Dr. Michelle Liang are fellowship-trained specialists in retinal diseases and along with Dr. Phillip Gendelman have performed thousands of surgeries and treatments for diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, retinal tears, retinal detachments and macular holes.
Laser Eye Surgery
With visual changes slowing and sometimes stopping in our 20’s and 30’s, it is recommended to have an exam every 3 to 5 years. More frequently if you wear glasses or contact lenses, or have been diagnosed with eye disease or a visual problem. This is the recommended age for LASIK, to improve and correct vision, lessening or removing the dependence on glasses or contact lenses.
Cataracts
A cataract is a condition in which the lens of the eye becomes clouded or opaque. When this occurs, visual disturbances (for example: glare, fuzzy vision) may make daily activities more difficult.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is the most frequently performed surgical procedure in the world. In conventional cataract surgery, the surgeon uses hand held instruments to manually create a circular opening in the outer shell of the cataract. Next the surgeon uses instruments to break up and remove the cataract. Finally, the surgeon implants an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) inside the remaining shell to replace the natural lens.
Eye Exam
Eye exams are important from an early age. The first eye exam should be performed by a pediatrician in the first 3 months of life. Eye exams are recommended next at 1 year and then every 2 years by the pediatrician. Should a visual disturbance be detected, additional evaluation by a pediatric ophthalmologist is recommended. In-school screenings, while serving an important purpose, are not a substitute for an eye exam.

Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in working-age Americans suffering with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, and early detection is the key to maintaining good eye health and preventing vision loss. If you have diabetes or are at risk for developing diabetes, it is important to schedule annual eye exams with your ophthalmologist, so that you can properly monitor the health of your eyes.

Ultrasound
Advanced diagnostic equipment, including the Humphrey visual field testing and Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT) is available for our glaucoma patients. Fluorescein angiography, fundus photography, Fundus Autofluorescence, Preferential Hyperacuity Testing, Spectral Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and the B-Scan Ultrasound are utilized for our patients with retinal disease. Also, corneal topography, IOL master, and the Holladay IOL Consultant is utilized for patients with cataracts or corneal conditions.
