American Journal of Ophthalmology of 36 patients treated at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute for paintball injuries to the eye, the injuries were often severe. Eighty one percent of patients needed surgery including enucleation (removal of the eye). The rest had a rupture of the eyeball or detached retina (light-sensitive tissue lining the inner surface of the eye). Although normal vision was restored in 36% of eyes, the majority had permanent visual loss.

Laser Eye Surgery
You’ll discover many different types of eyelid surgeries when talking with ophthalmologist Dr. Scott. For example, ptosis is a condition that causes upper eyelids to droop. Dr. Scott performs ptosis corrective eye surgery with an internal technique that leaves no visible scarring. If you have ptosis of the eyelids that is blocking your vision in one or both eyes, this corrective procedure may be covered by your medical insurance.
Cataracts

Endocrinologist

Thyroid
Eyelid retraction is a condition where the eyelid moves away from the pupil. This creates a round-eyed appearance and can cause redness, irritation, discomfort and tearing. A lower eyelid retraction can occur naturally with aging or from trauma or thyroid disease. Oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Scott will make every effort to restore the eyelid to its appropriate position by releasing scar tissue. He may also utilize an internal spacer graft to achieve the best final eyelid position.

Mohs Surgery
Mohs micrographic surgery involves removing a visible tumor and analyzing small fragments from around the tumor edge for evidence of cancer. Mohs removal of a cancerous eyelid tumor is performed by a dermatologist who specializes in this surgical technique. Once the diagnosis of cancer is confirmed, Dr. Scott will frequently combine efforts with a Mohs surgeon. In this scenario, the cancer removal is performed by the Mohs surgeon in the morning, followed with Dr. Scott reconstructing the resultant eyelid defect the same day at Fair Oaks Hospital on an outpatient basis.

Botox
Temporary symptomatic relief is possible with lubricating eye drops, skin tape to hold the eyelid in place or strategically placed stitches. On occasion, Botox may be used to temporarily relax the eyelid while awaiting a more definitive surgical repair. Most often, an entropion requires correction through a brief surgical procedure in which Dr. Scott repositions the eyelid(s). Inward-turning eyelids can cause skin and eyelashes to rub against the eye. Left untreated, this can damage your vision. As a fellowship-trained eyelid plastic surgeon, Dr. Scott can correct an entropion on an outpatient basis. At times, more than one procedure may be needed to achieve the best results.

The fractional laser resurfacing tip delivers hundreds of tightly spaced, individual beams of laser light energy for a controlled tightening of the top two layers of skin. The intervening, untreated skin can now rapidly fill in the treated area with brand-new skin that is tighter and smoother. This, combined with lower lid tightening and possible fat removal, can help the eyelids obtain a more youthful appearance. As with any lower eyelid procedure, this treatment will not eliminate muscle folds that occur across the lower lid with natural smiling. The tightening of the laser resurfacing is best-appreciated when the facial muscles are at rest. With fractional skin resurfacing, Dr. Scott can give your skin renewed look and texture.

Skin Cancer
Your eyelids are extremely susceptible to skin cancer from sun exposure. The most common eyelid cancer is called basal cell carcinoma. If left untreated, these tumors can grow and destroy part or all of an eyelid. If neglected long enough, the tumor can even grow into the eye socket.
Dermatology
Archives of Dermatology took measurements of UV radiation in 32 high-altitude ski areas in western North America and interviewed 3,937 adult skiers and snowboarders on sun protection. The study found the highest UV radiation level to be at midday as well as during the late winter and early spring (the highest UV rating being at the Mammoth Mountain in California). It was also observed that chances of UV radiation damage were low with adults who used sunscreen and protective eyewear, although fewer did use other sunshields like wearing hats and protective clothing or using lip balm.
Lesions
Fortunately, most lesions of the eyelid are benign and with a careful examination of the eyelids by a skilled eyelid plastic surgeon one can frequently distinguish between benign and malignant tumors. However, some benign eyelid growths are so similar in appearance to malignant growths, a histologic examination is necessary to ensure an accurate diagnosis.

This microdermabrasion treatment delivers a controlled stream of microcrystals over the skin through a special hand piece.
