He then completed an Ophthalmology residency at SAUSHEC in San Antonio, TX & his Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship at Children’s Mercy Hospitals & Clinics in Kansas City, MO. Dr. Sauberan enjoys bike rides with his children, watching Green Bay Packers football and golfing. He resides in Lincoln, NE with his wife and 4 children.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a deterioration or breakdown of the macula. The macula is a small area in the retina at the back of the eye that allows you to see fine details clearly and perform activities such as reading and driving. When the macula does not function correctly, your central vision can be affected by blurring, dark areas or distortion. Macular degeneration affects your ability to see near and far and can make some activities– like threading a needle or reading—difficult or impossible. Although macular degeneration reduces vision in the central part of the retina, it usually does not affect the eye’s side, or peripheral, vision. For example, you could see the outline of a clock but not be able to tell what time it is.
Laser Eye Surgery
Dr. Diedrichsen’s refractive surgery experience extends over the past 20 years. He performed the first approved laser refractive surgical procedure in Nebraska for myopia in January 1996. He has performed refractive surgery in Lincoln, Grand Island and Norfolk prior to building the Columbus Surgery Center in 2006. All refractive surgery is now performed at this state-of-the-art facility. Co-management with the patients’ optometrist may be arranged at other locations across Nebraska for the convenience of the patient. Currently, he is performing standard or custom laser, PRK (photo refractive keratectomy), LASIK (Laser in situ Keratomileusis) with IntraLase using the Visx Star4laser in Columbus, Nebraska.
Cataracts
Dr. Emig is a specialist in medical and surgical treatment of the vitreous and retina, diabetic eye disease, and cataracts. Born in Memphis, he was raised in the Midwest. He holds a bachelor of arts degree with distinction from the University of Kansas and a medical degree from the University of Kansas Medical Center. Following an internship at St. Joseph’s Medical in Pheonix, Dr. Emig served his opthalmology residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He completed his formal training with a fellowship in vitreoretinal disease at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Midwest Eye Care. Dr. Emig joined Midwest Eye Care in 1994.
