Fibromyalgia
Most of us can deal with a little pain. We may have the occasional ache from overdoing it at the gym or a twinge from bumping our shins on the bed, but most of the time we can ignore it, take an anti-inflammatory and go about our day. But when pain is widespread throughout your body and is accompanied by fatigue, changes in mood and sleep patterns, you may be dealing with a more serious physiological condition: Fibromyalgia.
Plantar Fasciitis
Chronic injuries may be less agonizing in the short term but more debilitating in the long term. A chronic sports injury can develop gradually as some underlying physical imbalance puts too much stress on particular tissues or joints. Scar tissue left over from a previous injury can cause chronic pain by restricting the muscles and connective tissues, a condition known as “adhesion.” Athletes who punish their legs can develop chronic injury issues such as runner’s knee, jumper’s knee and a foot inflammation called plantar fasciitis. These conditions only get worse and worse without treatment.

Stroke Rehabilitation
Stroke is a leading cause of disability in adults. Your physical therapist is part of the stroke rehabilitation team and will develop an individualized plan for the best outcome. Your physical therapist can help you improve walking and balance, train you on how to use assistive devices and provide training for your caregivers. Therapy typically includes constraint-induced movement therapy, functional electrical stimulation, motor image, partial body weight support and neuro therapy like biofeedback. Biofeedback is a type of neurological therapy that helps you be aware of how your muscles work and how you can change things. The therapist will attach electrodes to your skin, so you can see measurements of muscle activity on a screen. The goal of your physical therapist is to help you regain functional skills after a stroke, so you can get back to your life.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Pinched Nerves: Pinched nerves can cause pain that you may feel at the point of impingement or further down the nerve pathway (referred pain). Carpal tunnel syndrome is an example; swollen tissues pinch the median nerve, causing hand/wrist pain.
Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurological disease that causes the body’s immune system to abnormally attack the covering of the nerve cells, called myelin. This causes scarring and decreases the nerve’s ability to transmit signals properly. The progression of MS is based on 4 different types of aggressiveness. Multiple sclerosis is categorized by bouts of activity, with periods of minimal to no activity, depending on the different type of MS you may be suffering from. Symptoms can vary person to person dramatically as different parts of the brain, spinal cord or peripheral nerves are affected, making no two cases alike.

One of our licensed Windham, NH physical therapists will take a look at your medical history, and conduct a thorough examination to decide what type of treatment you’ll need. This may include stretches, ultrasound therapy, manual therapy, and at-home exercises to reduce pain and strengthen or loosen your pelvic muscles, depending on your condition.
MRI
One of the biggest problems surrounding this knee injury is the extended period of inactivity that occurs after the injury. It often takes a few weeks to see an orthopedic surgeon. An MRI typically follows and one must wait for a period to get the MRI…followed by a wait to see the physician for follow-up. Surgery is scheduled usually a few weeks or months after that depending on the physician’s schedule and knee joint swelling. During this period of weeks and months, the body is breaking down muscle and bone that will take months to restore. The longer it took to get started on PT, the longer it takes for the muscles to return to their pre-injury level. Many of the top sports medicine Docs will refer patients to PT prior to surgery, but by then 1 month might have passed. In an ideal world, an athlete with this injury would be in our office exercising within 3 days of the injury.
Computed Tomography
To diagnose vertigo, a medical professional will take a full history of your symptoms and events. This includes previous medical issues, recent illnesses, and medications. Then, a physical exam is performed. It includes a comprehensive neurological exam to check brain function. This allows for the determination of whether it’s peripheral or central. Signs of abnormal eye movement may pinpoint the problem. The Dix-Hallpike test or the roll test may be done. The Dix-Hallpike test repositions the head and monitors symptoms. With the roll test, the head is rapidly moved from side to side. A CT scan or MRI may be done to exclude structural problems. Sometimes, electronystagmography may be performed.

Sciatica
Sciatica is a dysfunction of the sciatic nerve or its nerve roots. The sciatic nerve is an enormous nerve that relays all the motor commands and sensory impulses to and from either leg. When this nerve tissue becomes pinched for any reason, the flow of information along its length is disrupted. Sciatica is notorious for causing pain, tingling sensations, numbness, and loss of strength or motor control in the buttock, leg or foot. It can also cause lower back pain.
Whiplash
Head and back injuries from a car wreck are typically the most serious. Head injuries can lead to vision problems, skull fractures and concussions. With a concussion, you may experience dizziness and headaches. Another common car accident injury is a herniated disk. Neck and chest injuries are also common, with whiplash being the most common accident injury. Whiplash can be very painful and restrict movement. The sudden movement of the neck and head in a car accident can cause whiplash. Blunt force trauma from a car accident can collapse lungs and break ribs.
Arthroscopy
Sometimes, home remedies can relieve the symptoms of TMJ dysfunction. Some people respond well to over-the-counter meds like ibuprofen and aspirin. Ice packs applied to the jaw joint may also help. Sedative essential oils, such as clary sage and lavender may give temporary relief. When home remedies don’t work, medical treatment may be needed. A jaw specialist may use a dental splint to keep teeth properly aligned and to prevent tooth grinding. Other types of medical treatment include trigger point acupuncture, joint replacement or a TMJ arthroscopy. Muscle relaxers and anti-inflammatory meds may be prescribed.

Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy works closely with patients who have MS to help improve their quality of life. Occupational therapists evaluate the function and use of the hands and upper extremities. Furthermore, we help you evaluate the needs for adaptive techniques and equipment for work and everyday life activities. Occupational therapy can make a big difference in your quality of life.
Frozen Shoulder
Frozen Shoulder: Adhesive capsulitis, aka frozen shoulder, usually develops in a shoulder that has been immobilized for a long time (as in a broken arm constrained by a cast for several weeks).
Tennis Elbow
Chronic sports injuries are typically related to overuse. For instance, over-training on the tennis court can mean too many racket swings for your shoulder, elbow or wrist tissues to handle. Tiny tears in the tissues have no chance to heal themselves before new tears are added, leading to the ache of tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome or rotator cuff strain. (Golfers develop similar injuries for the same reasons.) A degenerative problem such as a bulging disc can also pinch critical nerves, weakening an arm or leg, and causing all kinds of discomfort in that extremity.

Aquatic Therapy
Physical therapists can even treat vertigo due to a car accident. In as little as one treatment, they can fix a dysfunction in the vestibular system. Types of physical therapy include massage, manual manipulation, ultrasound, ice and cold therapy, specific exercises, targeted massage, stretching and aquatic therapy. It’s a holistic approach to healing after being in a car accident. In addition to treatment after a car accident injury, physical therapists can provide services for pulmonary rehab, neurologic rehab, cardiovascular, orthopedic and post-op care.
Manual Therapy
In 2008 Co-founders, Chris and Pete were accepted into the 1-year residency program at the Institute of Orthopaedic Manual Therapy and completed the Certificate program at the end of that year. Pete went on to complete the Level II Fellowship program in 2009.
TMJ Dysfunction
The temporomandibular joint connects the jaw to the skull. If there is an injury to this joint or it becomes damaged, it can cause TMJ Dysfunction (also referred to as TMJ Syndrome, TMJ Disorder, or simply TMJ). TMJ can also be caused by a misalignment of the teeth, gum chewing, arthritis, teeth grinding or jaw injury. Symptoms of this disorder include pain in the jaw, jaw popping, headaches, sore jaw muscles, locking of the jaw, pain in the temple and earache. It’s important to realize that the temporomandibular joint is a complex and important structure comprised of bones, tendons and muscles, and you may have pain on one or both sides of the jaw.

Since there are so many pieces that contribute to balance and gait, there are also many ways that disorders in these areas can occur. Balance disorders can result from damage to the inner ear and head injuries, to more simple causes like an ankle injury. Gait disorders can be similarly complex. A knee injury that makes you walk differently may be obvious, while an injury to your little toe might not be something you immediately relate to your trouble when walking and running.
