Urinary Incontinence
Incontinence is the inability to control the bladder (urinary) or bowel movements (fecal). Urinary incontinence can range in severity, from occasionally leaking urine when you cough or sneeze to a sudden, strong urge to urinate. Fecal incontinence can also range in severity, from an occasional leakage of stool while passing gas to a complete loss of bowel control.

There are many types of treatments for urine incontinence including behavioral modification, pelvic floor physical therapy/Biofeedback, MonaLisa Touch laser treatments, medication, Botox bladder injections, posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS), Coaptite transurethral bulking agent injection, sling insertion surgery or InterStim sacral neuromodulation surgery. A complete exam and detailed evaluation is needed to determine which treatments are best for any individual patient.

Gynecology
As the only female urologist in the South Bay, Dr. Morrisroe actually bridges the gap between gynecologic and urologic medicine. The Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship is recognized by both the American Board of Urology and the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Dr. Morrisroe is the only doctor in the South Bay who has completed this fellowship. She offers patients training and experience in a myriad of evaluative and management techniques for pelvic pathology. She also treats patients with prior failed reconstructions, including complications resulting from the use of vaginal and/or urethral synthetic mesh. From the simplest urinary tract infection to complex fistula disease to pelvic organ prolapse, Dr. Morrisroe is trained to diagnose and treat any and all female urologic issues.

Endometriosis
Painful intercourse (dyspareunia) can be caused by endometriosis (in which tissue that normally lines the uterus grows outside of it), pelvic masses, ovarian cysts, sexually transmitted diseases, the presence of scar tissue from surgery, inflammation of the vagina (vaginitis) or poor lubrication.
Pregnancy
Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) occurs when one of the pelvic organs prolapses (falls) from its normal position. It is caused by an injury to the tissues or muscles that support the pelvic organs. The main cause of this injury is pregnancy and childbirth.
Labor and Delivery
Genitourinary fistula repair is surgical procedure used to treat both rectovaginal and vesicovaginal fistulae in women. A rectovaginal fistula is an abnormal connection between the rectum and the vagina. When this abnormal connection occurs, bowel contents can leak through the fistula, allowing gas and stool to pass through the vagina. This condition may be caused by an injury during childbirth, radiation treatments, cancer in the pelvic area, Crohn’s disease or other inflammatory bowel diseases and complications following surgery to the pelvic area.

Bladder Cancer
A partial cystectomy is surgical procedure that treats bladder cancer. Unlike a radical cystectomy, this surgery only removes part of the bladder instead of the entire organ.

Kidney Cancer
If discovered in the early stages, kidney cancer is most often managed surgically. The great majority of our patients with kidney cancer have kidney masses that are best suited for the laparoscopic or robotic technique (either partial nephrectomy or nephrectomy). However, some renal masses are simply too large to approach laparoscopically, and we are well-versed in the open nephrectomy for large renal masses.
Kidney Stones
Kidney stones are hard deposits, consisting of salts and minerals, that form inside the kidneys. These hard deposits often form when your urine becomes concentrated, allowing minerals to crystallize and stick together. If you recognize that you have a kidney stone early on, it will rarely cause any damage to your body. But if the stones get lodged in your urinary tract, they could cause pain, kidney damage, a urinary infection or other complications. In that case, surgery may be necessary.
Testicular Cancer
Testicular cancer is generally a disease affecting young men, and the diagnosis of cancer at a young age can be troubling. The radical orchiectomy for diagnosis and staging is critical. Appropriate post-op counseling for additional treatment requires up-to-date knowledge of treatment protocols. SBU physicians are not only technically experienced but also knowledgeable and compassionate and will work together with the patient and family to outline a treatment plan.
Urinary Tract Infection
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection of any part of the urinary system. This system includes the urethra, bladder, prostate, ureters and kidneys. Most UTIs occur in the lower urinary tract (bladder and urethra), and women are at a greater risk than men. A urinary tract infection can be quite painful, but the consequences are more severe when they spread to the kidneys. For the most part, UTIs are treated with antibiotics, but advanced testing is needed to identify the issue.
Prostate Cancer
This form of surgery aims to remove the entire prostate gland, seminal vesicles and surrounding lymph nodes to treat men with localized prostate cancer. Using the da Vinci surgical system, our surgeons can make more precise movements with their hands. This allows for the removal of all cancer, while preserving urinary control and erectile function.

During the surgery, we will use the da Vinci surgical system for precise hand control. We will make a small incision and insert a laparoscope (a thin device with small camera and light on the end). This allows our surgeons to see inside of your body to perform the procedure without making a large incision. Next, we will cut out the tumor and reconstruct your kidney. We will place a laparoscopic ultrasound probe on the kidney to ensure that the renal mass has been completely removed.
MRI
The management of prostate cancer involves the urologist, the radiation oncologist and the patient working together to decide on the appropriate treatment. SBU physicians are experienced and adept at the da Vinci prostatectomy, but this is not the only option. We routinely counsel our patients to meet with one of our radiation oncology colleagues to discuss radiation options. Additionally, we believe very strongly in active surveillance for the management of low risk prostate cancer. We are highly experienced in managing our active surveillance population with not only prostate biopsy, but also with ultrasound, MRI and blood and urine testing.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
Dr. Lesser’s focus is on combining proven oncologic principles with more modern, minimally-invasive surgical techniques. He was trained during the transition from traditional open surgery to minimally-invasive surgery ( laparoscopy and robotics) for the management of urologic cancers. The foundations of cancer management began with his early training with Dr. Donald Skinner at USC, where he learned the open approach to the surgical management of bladder cancer. Throughout his training, he learned to treat all forms of urologic cancer using these principles translated to the laparoscopic and robotic arena.
Vasectomy
A no-scalpel vasectomy (or keyhole vasectomy) is one of two methods to achieve male sterilization, the other being a traditional vasectomy. During a traditional vasectomy, a scalpel is used to make one or two small cuts in the skin of the scrotum. The vas deferens (the duct that carries sperm from the testicle to the urethra) is cut and a small piece may be removed. Then the vas deferens is tied or clipped and the scrotal incision is sewn up. These steps are then repeated on the other side.
Robotic Surgery
Dr. Matsunaga completed his urologic surgical residency at the University of California, Irvine. He worked closely with internationally renowned urologists Dr. Ralph Clayman and Dr. Thomas Ahlering receiving specialized training in advanced, minimally-invasive laparoscopic, robotic, and endourologic techniques. He earned several awards including the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons Outstanding Laparoendoscopic Resident Surgeon Award and Long Beach Veteran’s Outstanding Customer Service and Outstanding Resident Awards. He has authored several book chapters on laparoscopy and robotic surgery as well as published in several peer-reviewed medical journals.
Hysterectomy
Sacrocolpopexy is a minimally-invasive robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery that lasts 2-3 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. It can also be performed following a hysterectomy to provide long-term support of the vagina. Via abdominal or laparoscopic access, the synthetic mesh is inserted into the body and is suspended from the sacrum (a large triangular bone at the base of the spine). Sacrocolpopexy has lower failure rates than vaginal suspension but is slightly more invasive.
Laparoscopy
This surgery can be performed with robotic-assisted laparoscopy, which is minimally-invasive. 6 tiny incisions are made, running from the abdomen to the pubic bone. From the small incision in the abdomen, we can remove the affected part of the bladder and collect tissue samples for biopsy. Using these samples, we can determine if all of the cancer has been removed. The advantages of robotic-assisted laparoscopy include decreased blood loss, shorter hospital stays, and an earlier return to full activities.
Reconstructive Surgery
Dr. Morrisroe completed her urologic surgical residency at the University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences Center in Pennsylvania. She then completed a two-year fellowship in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at UCLA, training under the world renowned pelvic floor surgeon, Dr. Shlomo Raz.

Pelvic floor re-education aims to restore normal function, strength and tone to the pelvic floor muscles. Using physical therapy, the physicians at South Bay Urology can help women who experience urinary incontinence, overactive or painful bladder symptoms, pelvic floor myalgia (muscle pain) and pelvic organ prolapse (POP). During pregnancy, the pelvic floor muscles are weakened and undergo stretching and occasional trauma during delivery. Since the abdominal muscles and the pelvic floor muscles share the same connective tissue, you can experience pelvic floor issues even if you’ve had a C-section.
