Space Maintainers
A space maintainer is a removable or fixed appliance designed to maintain an existing space. They are usually fitted to children when they have lost baby teeth early. The gap left from losing this tooth needs to be held open for the permanent tooth to erupt in its correct position.

Deep Cleaning
Well, I finally did it, I found a Dental office that is caring, patient, intelligent and understands my fear of the dental experience. I have been going to the dentist for over forty years, and the last fifteen have been the worst. But today that ended. The entire office staff from the front desk, to the dental assistant, Hygienist, and Dr. Lorraine were wonderful. I have never experienced a deep cleaning and a filling without an injection and no pain, all in the same visit. I highly recommend the Tomlinson Dental practice, to all my family and friends.

Many patients complain that when they received dentures, they noticed pain in the jaw, headaches, ear problems and other symptoms. Sometimes taking the dentures out will relieve those symptoms.

Dental Implants
During this time, it is important to think about a tooth replacement option. An extracted tooth leaves an open area in the jaw which, in time, allows the neighboring teeth to drift into the area where the tooth was extracted. This in turn, causes a chain reaction to all the surrounding teeth. Also, if you are considering placing an implant in the future, you should consider asking your dentist to place a bone graft at the time of surgery to preserve the bone width and height.

Flap Surgery
When deep pockets between teeth and gums (6 millimeters or deeper) are present, it is difficult for a dentist to thoroughly remove the plaque and tartar. Gum flap surgery is a procedure where the gum flap is lifted away from the tooth. Diseased tissue and sometimes bone is removed. The rough surfaces of the tooth are then smoothed by root planing. The area is medicated and the gum flap is replaced and sutured allowing the bone and gum tissue to heal.

When a tooth is extracted and an implant is to be placed (either simultaneously or in the future) it is always necessary to complete bone grafting within the residual sockets that are left behind after the roots of the tooth are removed. The shape of the tooth root is always different from the shape of a dental implant and hence there are always residual socket defects (holes) that must be filled in so that there can be excellent contact of the implant to the newly formed bone.

Dr. Tomlinson graduated from Howard University School of Dentistry in 1986. She was a Captain in the Air Force from 1987-1990. She has over 30 years of experience in the dental field. Dr. Tomlinson is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, National Dental Association, Tampa Bay Area Dental Association, American Dental Association, Hillsborough County Dental Association, the Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU), and a Dawson Academy Alumni. She was born and raised in the reggae capital of the world, the sun-drenched tropical island of Jamaica. She is married to her husband Richard. Dr. Tomlinson has a son who is a financial analyst and a daughter who has followed in her footsteps, and is a dentist in the practice.
