Glaucoma is actually a class of disorders that develop in a similar way. The amount of aqueous (pronounced a-kwee-us) humor, a watery fluid that fills the inside of the eyeball, begins to build up. As more of this fluid collects, it places greater pressure on all parts of the eye, including the optic nerve. Eventually the excess pressure destroys the nerve. It is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the US.
Ophthalmology
Dr. Maizel was the first retina specialist to practice in Lake County. He received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine and interned at Chestnut Hill Hospital in Philadelphia. He served his residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He is a diplomate of both the American Board of Ophthalmology and the National Board of Medical Examiners, and his many endeavors include a Fellowship in Vitreo-Retinal Diseases and Surgery at the Baylor College of Medicine. He is board certified in Ophthalmology.
Macular Degeneration
Dr. Ray Maizel ’s participation in the Phase III Trial of Lucentis®, the FDA-approved medication for stabilizing vision in those with the wet form of macular degeneration, and Visudyne® photodynamic therapy, have given him additional measures of knowledge and expertise in the treatment of this sight stealing condition. This translates to better patient care.

Eyelid Retraction- The upper or lower eyelids may appear as if they open too widely. A significant amount of the white part of the eye (sclera) is visible, giving the person a staring appearance. Sometimes the eyelids cannot close completely. This condition is often associated with thyroid disease but may have other causes.
Diabetic Retinopathy
One of the most common diseases of the retina is diabetic retinopathy. It occurs in people with diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy can cause permanent loss of sight and is the leading cause of blindness among adults aged 25 to 55 in the United States.

Ultrasound
As we have mentioned early diagnosis is key and makes treatment quicker and easier for the patient. Mid Florida Eye Center prides themselves on offering the latest in retinal testing. At your visit the doctor may recommend one or a combination of tests. These tests maybe; Ultrasound Testing, Fluorescein & ICG Angiography, Optical Coherence Tomographer (OCT) or an Electroretinogram.

Reconstructive Surgery
A small percentage of eyelid lesions, however, are malignant. These are skin cancers that must be removed before they enlarge and spread. Some malignant lesions have a similar appearance to benign lesions. It is important that most lesions which are surgically removed be sent to a laboratory for evaluation. After removal, reconstructive surgery must be performed to repair the defect that remains. Small lesions may be removed without stitches to close the defect. Large tumors, however, may require removal of the entire eyelid to ensure that the whole tumor is removed.

Eyelid Surgery
If you’re considering reconstructive or cosmetic eyelid surgery, you should decide what physical attributes you want to refresh. Is there too much skin? Does it hang over the lashes? Are the wrinkles too excessive? Are the eyelids unequal in appearance? Do the lower lids have heavy bags? You may simply look at your eyes and decide you want a more youthful look. During your initial consultation, our oculoplastic specialist can explain what can be surgically enhanced in order to accomplish your desired look.
Blepharoplasty
Cosmetic eyelid surgery is performed to improve the appearance of the eyes and face. The cosmetic surgical procedure most often performed to improve the appearance of the eyelids is a blepharoplasty.

Lesions
Varicella-zoster virus may travel to the head and neck, perhaps involving an eye, part of the nose, mouth, cheek, and forehead. In about 40 percent of those with shingles in this area, the virus infects the cornea. These zoster-related corneal lesions will usually clear up on their own. But without early anti-viral treatment, a person runs the risk of the virus infecting cells deep within the tissue, causing inflammation and scarring of the cornea. The disease may also cause decreased corneal sensitivity. For many, this decreased sensitivity will be permanent.
