My wife is recovering from a stroke suffered 3+ years ago. The rehab was going well, and she'd progressed from totally bedbound with an inoperative left side (leg and arm) to being able to grasp items with her affected hand and walk with assistance, even able to climb stairs. She still needed assistance for standing, eating, going to the bathroom, etc.
In Sept '09 I brought her into emergency at SDCH with pains in her abdomen. Admission was quick, but that was the good news. It took 4 days for their gastrointestinal doctors to find out that it was her appendix, while they explored 2 other different theories. During that time, they denied her any nourishment except for intravenous saline, pumped various dyes into her system for different scans and X-rays done daily, and neglected basic hygiene, allowing her to lay for hours in her own stool before attending to it (I cleaned her up myself on several occasions).
After they finally figured out that it was her appendix on the fourth day, they got her to surgery, and, during that, gave her an MRSA (highly resistive Staph infection) which took another 10 days to kick, loaded down with 3 different antibiotics all the while.
When discharged, her digestive system was trashed from all the antibiotics, her left side was inoperative again, she'd lost muscle strength and coordination in her leg, and she couldn't move her fingers (from lack of nutrition). Her rehabilitation had been set back at least 2 years. And the diagnosing surgeon had the nerve to brag about how he "nailed" the diagnosis...after 4 days!
When I was a kid during the '50s, it was common knowledge that any general MD could diagnose appendicitis or a ruptured appendix inside of a couple of hours, have the patient on the table in 3, and in recovery by the end of the day. At SDCH, apparently, that's not possible. It takes their highly trained and experienced specialists 4 days to "nail" just the diagnosis.
Far as I'm concerned SDCH has seen us for the last time.
