Colon Cancer
Hemorrhoids do not become cancer. However, they cause symptoms that can be like those caused by colon cancer. The only way to prove that symptoms are from hemorrhoids and not from colon cancer is to be evaluated and possibly tested by a physician experienced in both diseases and other diseases that can mimic hemorrhoids.

Ultrasound
Dr. John Winston’s surgical & research interests include defecatory physiology, anorectal ultrasound, benign anal diseases, rectal cancer and minimally invasive surgery. He is board certified in both general surgery and colon and rectal surgery. He has been elected as fellow in both the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon & Rectal Surgery, achieving this very early in his career. This gives him the added skill & experience to take care of the most complex diseases of the colon, rectum and anus.

General Surgery
Dr. Winston received an engineering degree from the University of Alabama then received his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He completed his residencies in General Surgery & Colorectal Surgery at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC receiving diverse training in all aspects of surgery of the colon, rectum & anus. After completing his training, he held academic positions at the Ohio State University then the University of Texas HSC at San Antonio.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Ultimately, under the guidance of several prominent colon and rectal surgeons, Dr. Skelton changed his career path to that of colon and rectal surgery. His surgical interests include benign and malignant disease of the colon and rectum, anorectal disease such as anal fistula, and minimally invasive surgery. He is board certified in both general surgery and colon and rectal surgery. He is an active member in the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, and served as the president of the Texas Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
