Dental Examination
We provide most care under magnification to ensure we recognize any potential problems at its earliest stages. We also provide a thorough soft tissue examination and oral cancer screening with each examination and cleaning.
X-rays
Adults should have bite wing x-rays at least once a year, twice if you are at high risk for tooth decay. Children should have bite wing x-rays twice per year
Oral Cancer Screening

Teeth Cleaning
Go at least once a year for a cleaning and exam. Even without insurance, it is much better than trying to catch up and repair later.
Fluoride Treatment
All adults are scheduled for a full hour for routine cleanings with the hygienist. At this time the dentist does a thorough examination and oral cancer screening. We believe this amount of time is required to be able to provide the highest quality of care to our patients. If the dentist determines additional treatment is needed, we will discuss it with you at this time. In some cases we schedule an additional examination and consultation time. We strongly recommend and routinely provide a fluoride treatment after a cleaning even if you live in an area with fluoridated water. Please let us know prior to your appointment if you would like to deviate from our recommended protocol.
Dental Sealants
Asking your hygienist or dentist about sealant applications to protect your child's teeth-chewing surfaces and about bottle tooth decay, which occurs when teeth are frequently exposed to sugared liquids.
Space Maintainers
Since primary teeth are what guides permanent teeth into place, infants with missing primary teeth, or infants who prematurely lose their baby teeth may require a space maintainer (a device used to hold the natural space open). Without a maintainer, teeth can tilt towards the empty space and cause your child’s permanent teeth to come in crooked. Always let your dentist know about any missing teeth your child has. Both adults and children are susceptible to plaque and gum problems, hence the need for regular dental checkups and proper care. If you live in a non-fluoridated area, we recommend fluoride supplements as part of your normal dental routine.

Fillings
Resin Composite
Bonding is a common solution for fixing or repairing chipped or decayed teeth, reducing unsightly gaps between teeth and hiding tooth discoloration. With bonding, a composite resin, is bonded to an existing tooth.
Veneers
Veneers are thin, semi-translucent "shells" made of porcelain material and permanently bonded to your front teeth. Veneers are used to correct spaces between the teeth, broken or chipped teeth, stained or discolored teeth and crooked or misshapen teeth.
Crowns
Porcelain crowns are a common choice for aesthetically restoring your smile by correcting damaged, decayed or cosmetically unpleasing teeth, as well as improving their function. At John L. Covert, D.D.S., P.A. and Associates in San Antonio, we provide both all porcelain crowns and porcelain bonded to metal crowns.
Bridges
A crown, sometimes called a “cap”, is a tooth-like covering placed over a carefully prepared existing tooth. Used to strengthen, restore, or improve the appearance of your natural tooth, a crown is placed on an individual tooth, much like a thimble over your finger. Crowns serve many functions, in addition to being used to strengthen a tooth to accommodate the attachment of a fixed bridge. One of the most common uses is to support the tooth when there is no longer sufficient tooth structure left to place a filling. Crowns may also be used to protect the structure of a tooth that is fractured or broken.
Dental Bonding
Veneers are a great aesthetic solution to your smile that may even help you avoid orthodontic treatment. Subtle changes to your smile can be achieved with veneers, and in most cases, veneer application is completed in only two office visits. Porcelain veneers are more esthetic than composite bonding and tend to last longer.
Restorative Dentistry

Root Canal Treatment
Many general dentists do a very good job with anterior root canals, and some do molar root canal procedures well. However, I recommend that trained endodontists do most molar root canals. They have two or three years of additional training, most do their treatment under microscope, and they are able to perform endodontic surgery if you require it.

Deep Cleaning
Scaling and root planing is a two-part deep-cleaning, non-surgical procedure used to remove tartar build-up and prevent continued bone loss. Scaling is the portion of treatment where plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line are scraped away. Planing smooths rough spots on the tooth root. Smoothing the rough spots removes bacteria and provides a clean surface for the gums to reattach to the teeth.

Dentures
Periodontal disease, injury and tooth decay can all cause a loss of your natural teeth. However, we can bring back the smile on your face with dentures to restore your missing teeth. With improved technology and updated materials, dentists can now make them appear more natural and more comfortable for the patient.

Dental implants are the next best thing to having your own teeth. If you’ve lost a tooth or teeth due to tooth decay, gum disease, an accident or other instance, dental implants will allow you to restore your smile with a natural look and feel, giving you confidence to smile, once again.

We generally provide scaling and root planing under local anesthesia. We later re-evaluate your periodontal condition to determine if scaling and root planing was sufficient treatment, or if you will require additional treatment from a periodontal specialist. Other periodontal procedures include grafting, flap and osseous surgery. Implant placement and crown lengthening procedures will be referred to a properly trained periodontist.

Orthodontics
Actual orthodontists are identified by MS or MSD following their DDS. They can also be identified by the terms "orthodontics exclusively" or "practice limited to orthodontics". These doctors have completed a two or three year residency training program and either have a Master’s degree in orthodontics or a certificate in orthodontics. They are Board certified or Board eligible. If they are a "Diplomat of the American Board of Orthodontics," they have taken an oral and written examination as well as presented cases for approval by their specialty board.
Invisalign Orthodontics
Invisalign and implant companies are marketing themselves directly to consumers and giving lists of participating dentists. They are both encouraging general dentists to become involved with these procedures. My opinion is that you would be much better served by having properly trained orthodontists, oral surgeons, and periodontists take care of you and be prepared to handle any complications. Also, it is my opinion that Implants should be placed by periodontists and oral surgeons. Please stay away from mini implants and carefully consider immediate implants.
Braces
Remove a broken appliance only if it comes out easily. If it is lodged or painful to remove, cover any protruding edges with wax, cotton balls, gauze or chewing gum. DO NOT REMOVE any wire caught in the gums, cheek or tongue; see a dentist immediately. Emergency attention is usually not required for loose or broken appliances that cause no discomfort.

Teeth Whitening
Your teeth may darken over time. Changes in the color of your teeth can be caused by such factors as the food and beverages consumed (like coffee, tea and soda). Other known factors for discoloration may include childhood medications or illnesses, tobacco use or improper oral hygiene. Restoring your natural white smile is a priority for our dental whitening team. We can provide a variety of options for whitening your smile.
Cosmetic Dentistry
We will discuss all necessary treatment with our patients. Optional treatment, like cosmetic dentistry, may be mentioned, but always with a clear distinction between what is necessary for good dental health and what is considered optional. We will prioritize needed treatment from most urgent to least urgent, and will help you understand what needs to be done and why. We have informational pamphlets and a library of videotapes on all dental procedures for your additional information.
General Dentistry
Dr. Aaron Vaughn graduated from Cole High School. He then spent a year at Ricks College in the shadows of the Teton Mountains before finishing his undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University. He came home to San Antonio in 1997 to attend Dental School at the UT Health Science Center. After graduation, Dr. Vaughn completed a one year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at the Audie L. Murphy hospital in San Antonio. He then completed an endodontic specialty residency at Virginia Commonwealth University where he earned a master’s degree in June 2005. Dr. Vaughn also holds a part-time position as Clinical Professor in the Department of Endodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center.
