One condition our physicians will sometimes diagnose through these comprehensive exams is endometriosis. Endometriosis is a condition that is characterized by the growth of normal endometrial cells outside of the endometrial cavity. This growth can occur anywhere in the pelvis but often affects ovaries, bowel, uterine surface, and the lining of the abdominal wall. This condition affects around 175 million women across the globe.

Ultrasound
The middle part of your pregnancy ( the 13th week through the 27th week ) is called the second trimester. During this time, you’ll likely have an appointment with us once a month unless there’s a reason to see you more often. There is usually a detailed ultrasound at around 18-20 weeks to look at the baby’s anatomy. Sometimes we can’t see everything we need to evaluate during this ultrasound due to the baby’s position or other scanning challenges—so we may need to schedule a follow up ultrasound. Unless there’s a medical reason for ultrasounds later in pregnancy, this will probably be the last one.
MRI
The first step to treating endometriosis is diagnosing it. If you’re experiencing symptoms your physician believes may be endometriosis pain, they will do a full exam and if required schedule an ultrasound, MRI, or CT scan of the abdomen area. If it is probable, they will do a laparoscopic examination where a small incision is made in the abdomen so a camera can be deployed in the area to see what’s going on.

In the past, open surgical hysterectomies resulted in hospital stays of several days, pain, a lengthy recovery time and a large abdominal scar. Now, minimally invasive surgical techniques result in hysterectomies that eliminate many of the disadvantages of traditional open surgical procedures.
Hysterectomy
Minimally invasive hysterectomies using laparoscopic techniques are unlike open surgeries because they are performed through one or more small incisions. These procedures may also allow more women, who may not be candidates for open surgery, to have a hysterectomy.
