Whether or not you should get an orthopedic MRI before seeing an orthopedic surgeon depends on your specific situation. In many cases, your primary care physician or general practitioner will initially evaluate your symptoms and conduct a physical examination. They may refer you to one of our orthopedic doctors in Raleigh.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common overuse injury. Arthritis is seen in the hand and wrist as in other joints. Trigger fingers, ganglion cysts and De Quervain’s tenosynovitis are also very common in patients who are experiencing hand and wrist pain.

Ultrasound
Sometimes it can be difficult to know exactly what is causing your joint pain. If your doctor believes that the pain is caused by swelling (or inflammation) of the joint he may recommend an ultrasound-guided injection.
MRI
The length of your appointment varies depending on the condition or injuries for which you are being treated and whether x-rays or an MRI is needed. Our doctors deliver individual attention and quality care, so please allow a minimum of one hour.
Radiology
At The Bone and Joint Surgery Clinic, our in-office radiology suite uses the latest technology available in digital imaging. Our radiology technologists use Digital Radiography (DR), eliminating the time consuming step of film processing and has lower radiation doses.
X-Rays
Computed Tomography
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive procedure that creates images with a magnetic field instead of x-rays. An MRI scan is ordered when the physician suspects a soft tissue injury that cannot be seen on x-rays or CT scans. A radiologist and our orthopaedic surgeon will read your MRI report and will use the MRI scan to determine the full extent of your injury. Results of the scan are usually available within a day. Once your results are ready, you’ll be able to view your MRI images and discuss your next steps of treatment with your physician.

After leaving the Army, Dr. Fleischer has continued to be active in clinical research as an attending spine surgeon and founder of the New England Neck and Spine Institute. He has continued his fundamental research work with dozens of academic publications and scientific presentations at international conferences focused on spine surgery and orthopedics. His research and scientific work have focused on the biomechanics of spinal implants and the use of stem cells in regenerative medicine. He continues to serve as a scientific oversight officer in a stem cell research company in Minneapolis, and he holds multiple patents for inventions stemming from his scientific research.

Dr. David T. Jones is originally from Little Rock, Arkansas. He has been with The Bone and Joint Surgery Clinic since 2006 when he and his family moved from New Orleans in the wake of hurricane Katrina. He trained at LSU in New Orleans in Orthopaedic Surgery and began private practice there in 1998. In 2002 he moved briefly to Boston, where he did additional training in trauma and minimally invasive surgery at Harvard and then returned to New Orleans.

Dr. Hammonds attended medical school at Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University (Greenville, NC). He joins our staff following his residency in orthopedic surgery at Cleveland Clinic (Akron, OH) and a fellowship in orthopedics sports medicine at the University North Carolina (Chapel Hill, NC) where he gained clinical and operative proficiency in sports injuries and surgery of the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee. Physical Therapy
Whitney earned her Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology from West Virginia University where she played collegiate soccer. She then worked as a coaching assistant for young athletes with disabilities through TOP Soccer League. It was during this time where she began to develop a passion for helping others perform to the best of their ability. She went on to earn her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at West Virginia University as well. Whitney has been working as a physical therapist in the triangle region for 5 years, where she has undergone extensive continuing education and earned various certifications. In 202 she became a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) through the NSCA in order to help improve athletic performance and reduce injury. She is also certified in dry needling, graston, kinesio taping, selective functional movement assessment and is an APTA certified clinical instructor. Whitney is passionate about helping her patients achieve their goals by taking an active role in their recovery.
Frozen Shoulder
Many shoulder problems are caused by soft tissue problems in the shoulder. Using the shoulder too much without proper rest can cause the soft tissue injuries to worsen. For example athletes and those working in jobs requiring manual labor frequently experience shoulder pain and injuries. Some of the more common shoulder injuries include dislocations, separations, tendinitis, bursitis, torn rotator cuffs, frozen shoulder and fractures. Shoulder injuries can cause pain in one spot, in a larger area, or in some cases down the arm.
Tennis Elbow
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) and golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis) are two of the most common causes of elbow pain, especially in athletic people. Other possible causes of elbow pain include olecranon bursitis, which is seen frequently due to trauma or overuse, and radial head fractures which may occur as a result of a fall. An unstable or compressed ulnar nerve is another common cause of elbow pain.
