Dr. Board graduated from Duke University with a degree in medicine in 1974. He completed his internal medicine internship and ophthalmology residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1976 and 1978. He went on to complete fellowship training in pediatric ophthalmology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto in 1981 and in ocular motility and strabismus at Smith-Kettlewell Institute of Visual Science in San Francisco in 1982. Ultrasound
During surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear, synthetic lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). Our ophthalmologists are experienced in monofocal, multifocal and toric intraocular lens implants. We use the latest surgical technique for cataracts called phacoemulsification, which uses only a small incision and no stitches. The cataract is broken apart using ultrasound vibrations before being gently suctioned away. The IOL is inserted through the same tiny incision, unfolding once inside the eye. This lens lasts a lifetime and will require no care by the patient.
