Founded in 1967, the New York State Department of Transportation works to coordinate and develop various modes of transportation systems. It maintains more than 100 billion vehicle miles of state and local highways. The department operates over 16,000 bridges and nearly 4,500-mile rail network that transports approximately 40 million tons of equipment, raw materials, manufactured goods and fresh produces annually. It also manages more than 500 public and private aviation facilities, over 10 ports and nearly 130 public transit operators that serve approximately 5 million passengers daily. The New York State Department of Transportation operates through several divisions, including delivery, engineering, information technology, administrative services, operations, legal affairs, audit and civil rights, and policy and planning. It manages a statewide transportation improvement program, as well as conducts a variety of educational and vocational training sessions in the areas of construction, engineering and transportation maintenance support services.
