Dental Examination
At the visit be prepared to hear your child fuss during the oral examination and toothbrush demonstration. However, parents are often surprised at how often infants are very passive and quiet and appear to enjoy the attention and novelty of the visit.
X-rays
Okay.. so the news today had some scary headlines about dental x-rays and brain tumors. At Family Dentists we use digital x-rays which result in reduced radiation vs. traditional film. We also use protective aprons and thyroid collars on all patients. We believe that dental x-rays are a very low risk diagnostic tool that can provide great information about dental conditions. Please alert the office if you have a medical condition that may be of concern prior to surgery (i.e. diabetes, high blood pressure, artificial heart valves and joints, rheumatic fever, etc.) or if you are on any medication (i.e. heart medications, aspirin, anticoagulant therapy, etc.) or require medication prior to dental cleanings (i.e antibiotics, for pre-med.)

Crowns
On rare occasions temporary crowns come off. Call us at 810-987-8310 if this happens, and keep the temporary so we can re-cement it. It is very important for the proper fit of your final restoration that temporaries stay in place.
Bridges
Crowns and bridges usually take two or three appointments to complete. On the first appointment the teeth are prepared. Temporary crowns or bridges are placed to protect the teeth while the custom restoration is being made. After each appointment when anesthetic has been used, your lips, teeth, and tongue may be numb for several hours after the appointment. Avoid any chewing until the numbness has completely worn off.

Root Canal Treatment
Though 90% of the root canals we perform are completed in one appointment, root canal therapy may take more than one appointment to complete. Since anesthetic has been used, your lips, tongue and the roof of your mouth may be numb for several hours after your appointment. Avoid chewing and hot beverages until the numbness has worn off.

DO NOT DISTURB THE AREA: For the next few days, and especially the first 24 hours, it is very important to allow your body to form a good clot and start the natural healing process. Swishing, sucking through a straw, and smoking can all dislodge the clot. Keep anything sharp from entering the wound (crunchy food, toothpicks, eating utensils). Be sure to chew on the opposite side for 24 hours.

General Dentistry
Drs. Jeremy Parrott and Julie Hengehold are husband and wife. They met while in dental school in Ann Arbor, MI. Jeremy graduated one year prior to Julie and completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry while stationed in Great Lakes, IL. After Julie graduated dental school, Julie and Jeremy got married. They had their reception at the historic and beautiful Thomas Edison Inn. After the wedding they moved to Okinawa, Japan to serve with the United States Navy. During the two years in Okinawa, Julie had the opportunity to deploy on a humanitarian mission to Bangladesh and Jeremy deployed on a humanitarian mission to the Philippines. They both enjoyed these missions and felt that it helped them grow clinically, personally and professionally. After Okinawa, they completed their active duty service in Newport, RI. They met a lot of great dentists in the Navy and gained great insight from working side-to-side with specialists. They enjoy surrounding themselves with good friends and sharing a good meal.
