Sore throats are sometimes caused by swelling from an infection of the tonsils (tonsillitis). Antibiotics are often used, but frequent episodes may indicated a tonsillectomy could be considered. A tonsillectomy can also be a treatment for breathing problems such as snoring and sleep apnea.
