I have been bringing all my pets here for 20+ yrs. Excellent care from upset stomach and ear infections, broken legs, surgery, kidney failure and end of life care. Couldn't ask for more caring people. They're like family. It is first come first serve to see the vet but that is only fair to everyone. They can be busy because their prices are reasonable and a lot of the time they don't charge you for things. They will explain anything you ask about. very caring people.

I have used this clinic for 9 years now. They have the equipment to give me the answers i need about my Dog.He was almost dead and they took a Blood test that showed several abnormalities. He was treated as best as i could afford.I couldn't afford an IV hooked up so they did an Under skin water Bubble. It didn't appear to bother my little Dog at all and the next Morning my Dog was almost completely normal acting.he had gone downhill for 3 days before i could drive the 120 miles i drive now to see these folks.I have used another Clinic once near where i live but was not impressed and left feeling like i was not a good Dog owner.I was talked down to and i am 58 the Vet was just 30.The Dog,cat & Bird Clinic always informed me what may cause the problems but never made me feel like i was not worthy of my Dog.

I have taken my fur babies here for years. They used to be a A plus place to take them . Since Dr. Harlan stopped seeing pets it's gone to the toilet they only care about your money. They told me my babies had heart worms. He didn't. I've had several including cats that I had to put to sleep . They didn't bother to check for cancer. I got tired of what ever vet I seen didn't know what they was doing (teaching hospital) my babies mean the world to me so I moved over to Grant Square Hospital where I get the best care.

Love them!

We take both of our puppies there and have for years. They have reasonable prices and they are very sweet to the girls. We wouldn't take our puppies anywhere else! We highly recommend them!

Let's be frank. This isn't going to be the fanciest vet clinic you will ever walk into. This is affordable health care for your pets. It is not an emergency clinic - first come first serve. Dr. Harlin is very knowledgeable and would never do anything to put your pet in jeopardy. As the review below indicates, they are always looking for ways to save you money rather than nickel & diming you to death. I took my dog there in October for a 'lick-sore', we followed up again in April and they didn't charge me an office visit because it was a 'follow-up'. They are doing the best they can. If you need to know every detail of your pet's visit, then maybe you should go to a regular vet office with regular vet prices. You can't have your cake & eat it too!

Roger Harlin, is the most unprofessional and rude person I have the displeasure of dealing with in a quite some time.

I brought my dog into the Southside Dog Cat & Bird Clinic have his teeth cleaned. He is a rescue and had some pretty bad teeth. They cleaned his teeth just fine, but they had to remove 3 teeth because of their condition. The problem I have with this vet is at no point in time did they ever call me and tell me he had 3 bad teeth and they never told me they pulled the teeth. I didn't know until the next morning I noticed teeth missing, so when I went to the office to ask about why they were gone, Robert got defensive and rude. When I told him I was upset, the first words he said to me were, "Well there are other places you can go for this kind of service." He also told me that they did me a service for not charging the $13 extraction fee for each tooth. He never did seem to care that I was never informed that teeth were removed and I was upset because of that. He said, "we probably should have said something."

Do not take your animal there because you never know what they will do to them when you're not there.

AWFUL

I took my dog in because she was choking and getting weak, and they made me wait behind six people before helping her.

The prices are reasonable, they do not overcharge. My dog had a problem last year that nobody could figure out...Southside couldn't figure it out, and I also took her to Neel Veterinary. Each place ran all kinds of tests, but all came back negative. The staff at Southside really did all they could to help her, and what I really appreciated was that they didn't charge me for consecutive re-exams for the same illness. Most vets will charge you each and every time you have to take your pet in, but they just charged me for meds when I had to keep taking her back for the same problem. We did eventually solve the mystery; she was having bad reactions to the heartworm medicine she was on. We switched her to another one, and she's been fine ever since. I think they're great. It's not posh, it's not glam...but it's not dirty, (as I saw one post elude to) the building is just an older building, with older furniture, but the clinic and exam rooms are clean. They are first come, first serve. If you don't like waiting, get there first. If you have an emergency and they can't get you in, go to Neel. What you don't want to do, is take your pet to Banfield. Did that done that. They overcharge, and oversell everything. They're more interested in selling you pet insurance than the health of your pet....and your wallet. I'd also like to add that I took an injured dove to Southside once... a wild bird, not a pet, and though she told me they couldn't treat wild animals, I could see it tugging at her. She wanted to help it., but all she could do was hold it and make it comfortable while it expired, so that's what she did. Point is, I don't think they'd let an eight week old kitten, an animal they CAN help...die out in their waiting room as that one post stated. I don't believe that for a minute. Southside Dog Cat and Bird are good people.

Worst place ever!

The were good with my dog Kane, but my female pitbull Nala was another story. When I had her spayed they left stitches inside of her belly that do not dissolve. She was oozing for a month while they kept giving me antibiotics for an infection that developed there thanks to those stitches( they had to be removed in another surgery).

About a year later I woke up in the morning to my pitbull acting strange, confused, not recognising me, or her surroundings and breathing rapidly. I suspected she had a seizure and took her back to the clinic. The female "doctor" looked at my dog and had the nerve to accuse me that my dog does not look like she had a seizure, but looks like she is high on drugs and asked if I or my room-mate keep drugs like cocaine at our house. Unbelievable, I know, but they kept my dog for few hours for observation and then released her with no improvements. That night my dog died during massive epileptic seizure, I never had the time to take her back to the hospital. I am trying to remember the name of this woman. I will add it as soon as I do.

Genuine care from Vets and very reasonable prices. Only downside can be the wait time since it's first come/first serve but worth it for the savings.

No place else

I love Dr. Harlin and his group. I can call anytime I have an emergency and they have seen us through some really rough times (one of the dogs had cancer). This is the only vet that my dog won't bite and they have done an emergency c-section and spaying on another one of our babies. (we have 5 dogs). I can always know that my pets will be well loved and pampered when they go there.

My family has taken ALL our pets here for 30+ yrs and have NEVER had a bad experience. I think the bad reviewers are only trying to get business for Ban---- (since this name is used). There can be a wait sometimes, but this is because it is first-come first-served (unless it is an emergency). I have lived in various places, including overseas, and Dr. Harland runs a top notch clinic. We drive over 45 mins to this clinic and will continue to do so!!!

Kind Services

I recently lost my dog Buster whom I loved very much. He was 10 1/2 years old. I've taken Buster to the Southside Dog Clinic he's entire life. We have always received excellent care and kindness from all the staff - from the front desk to the doctor to the surgeon. When I took him in this last time he was in a very bad way but they took him back immediately, worked very hard to revive him and they cried along with me as he passed. I have taken all my animals for the past 20 plus years to this clinic and I have been very satisifed with them. I have tried other vets that are closer to me but I didn't like them manner. It has always been worth the drive. The waiting is long sometimes depending on the day of the week. It's because they do everything possible to keep the price down to a minimum for the max. care. I will continue to use them when I have the heart to find another dog to love as I did so much for Buster.

Wait times are too long

I came in with a 8 week old kitten who was suffering from anemia and hoped to see someone right away so she could get a transfusion. They told me to wait, so I did, but when 30 minutes had gone by, I asked again because my kitten was beginning to go into shock. They told me to wait still, and after another 30 minutes, my kitten died in my hands. I watched a lady with a dressed up fluffy dog (who puts clothes on an animal????) go in before us. Don't think that dog's manicure was more important than my dying kitten, but it probably makes this place more money, and that's evidently all they care about. If you're experiencing a medical emergency with your pet, DO NOT take them here. Take them to Banfield ASAP.

Fast & Cheep

This is a great place to bring in a stray or your family pet. The people are friendly and work well with the animals. It is not the cleanest place, but the prices on shots are fair and I don't feel like this place over charges for their product.
