Multiple Sclerosis
Uveitis is a serious inflammation inside the eye that can cause glaucoma or cataract if not treated. The Argon laser treats the back chamber of the eye with unbelievable precision. Using this laser, I can place multiple tiny spots of heat – typically one half to one quarter the size of the head of a pin – into the retina. These tiny heat spots destroy abnormal and leaking blood vessels with stunning accuracy, curing and/or stopping the progression of blinding retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy.

Ultrasound
Your ophthalmologist may or may not order an ultrasound scan of your optic nerve, using Heidelberg Retinal Tomography, or HRT. HRT gives your ophthalmologist a 3 dimensional image of your optic nerve. This test can be repeated, and these images will show the smallest changes to the tissue of your nerve, allowing the ophthalmologist to detect even the slightest progression of your disease.
Chemotherapy
Most PRK surgeons treat the cornea with a chemotherapy agent called mitomycin-C (MMC) to decrease the risk of corneal haze after PRK. MMC kills corneal cells, so they do not grow back normally. This reduces haze, but at a price.

Minimally Invasive Surgery
The quick, minimally-invasive surgery uses a laser to cut a flap to reshape the cornea at the front of the eye. Now an expert who once backed LASIK is campaigning to get it off the market.

Breast Augmentation
The excimer laser – a powerful ultraviolet (invisible) laser that, like the YAG laser, emits nanosecond pulses – has a completely different purpose. Unlike the other lasers used in the eye, it is not designed to heal eyes that have a serious problem. It is used for purely cosmetic reasons: to eliminate the need for distance glasses. LASIK is the eye equivalent of breast augmentation, a tummy tuck, a face lift, or a nose job. Excimer laser treatment of the cornea has been a disaster, as the next chapter will show.

LASIK surgeons make more money than other eye surgeons because cosmetic surgery is not covered by insurance, so it is not subject to price limits set by insurance companies. Medicare.com says: “LASIK is not considered medically necessary; therefore, it is not covered.” LASIK.com states: “Most insurance companies don’t cover LASIK...it is nearly always considered an elective or cosmetic surgery.”

Ulcer
These symptoms can also be caused by a corneal abrasion or a corneal foreign body. If you have an ulcer, you can often see a tiny white spot on your cornea if you look in the mirror.
