MRI
MASA surgeons are regional experts in the followup of aortic aneurysm patients with a streamlined surveillance imaging program that uses CT scans or MRI to carefully measure the size of aortic aneurysms. If the critical size thresholds are met requiring repair, MASA surgeons have vast experience in new open-heart surgical techniques, such as valve-sparing aortic root replacements and axillary artery cannulation. These minimize the surgical risks to patients undergoing aneurysm repair, and mean that patient’s own valves may be spared without the need for valve replacement.

Dr. Kourosh Asgarian is a New Jersey native. He graduated from Rutgers College and earned his Medical degree in New York. He completed his Surgical Residency at Morristown Medical Center and his Cardiothoracic Fellowship at Albert Einstein/ Montefiore Medical Center in New York. He is Board certified in General Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery.
Robotic Surgery
Dr. Magovern joined Mid-Atlantic Surgical Associates in 1998. He is board certified in Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery, and performs all aspects of adult cardiac surgery, including minimally-invasive valve surgery, off-pump bypass surgery, and robotic surgery. Annually, he is one of the busiest cardiac surgeons in the State of NJ, with a surgical mortality rate among the lowest in the State.

Lesions
The MAZE procedure or ablation procedure is used by surgeons to treat atrial fibrillation. It has been modified many times over the years from the original procedure where the atrium was cut and then sewn back together to a much easier procedure with lower risk. In its common form, an energy source (most commonly radiofrequency energy) is used to create lesions or scar tissue in the atrium, which sets up electrical barriers in the heart. The goal is to channel the electrical flow in the heart and eliminate the chaotic rhythm of atrial fibrillation.
