Mason bees are very common through out the United States. Smaller than honey bees, they are often blue or bluish-black in color. Mason bees get their name because when eggs are laid within the nest, the cells with the eggs are sealed up with a mud-like substance. Male mason bees do not have a stinger and females will usually only sting if they are trapped or squeezed. Overall, mason bees are docile and are ideal garden pollinators. Mason bees are not very social and do not live with a queen bee.
Wasps
Paper wasps, the long skinny wasps that build upside down umbrella nests, are the plague of decks, gazebos, and play areas. Wasps will nest in virtually any spot that will offer protection including grills, lights, swing sets, mailboxes, under decks and railings, eaves, peaks, overhangs, or attics.
Flies
“We use Bee Control every year, probably since 2010 (time flies when summers are wasp free). We are going to hire them again this year (2013 season). I generally telephone Ian at Bee Control in the spring and he works us into their schedule; we do not have to be home. They do some spraying and then we see no wasps. In the past we had wasps in underground (front lawn) nests and also around the exterior (under deck, once inside of a flood light fixture). Since we became Bee Control customers, we have seen nearly zero wasps (occasionally one will crop up–dried and dead in the attic or flying through). This is a big change from before. Some may say the service is pricey, but it works and they will come back to retreat if the stinging insects come back–this is peace of mind and I think it’s worth every penny. Price will vary depending on the complexity and size of the property that they have to treat. When I’ve seen them, Bee Control’s employees were clean cut and courteous, and were able to spot existing wasp nests. I’ve never had them come back after the initial visit.” – Jeff, Pittsburgh, PA
Beetles
When wasp, yellowjacket, and hornet colonies die in the fall, the nest left behind is not reused the following year. However, other scavenging insects such as beetles can inhabit the abandoned nests so it is a good idea to have the abandoned nests removed if they have been constructed inside the property. However, if a location has proven attractive for nest building during one spring/summer, it is very possibly going to prove attractive to new queens seeking nesting sites during subsequent years. Also be aware that honey bee colonies can continue to thrive from year to year in the same nest (hive). On occasion, bumble bees can become active in the same area as previously experienced.
Hornets
“Jeremiah was very helpful and very informative yesterday as he removed a large bald faced hornets nest. I could not be more pleased with this company, especially there fast service, and efficiency. Now my kids can play safely next to there play house. Thanks again for being very prompt.” – Alex, Greensburg, PA
Yellowjackets
Stink Bugs
However, stink bugs have very quickly made their presence felt as a major aggravation to many property owners due to their determination to use properties for hibernation. This ‘invasion’ starts in September, continuing well into October, and they can appear on a single building in the hundreds. Their presence in the Eastern part of the USA has escalated dramatically since their accidental introduction from Asia in the 1990’s. They have been reported in at least 26 states and more recently in Iowa and California. They are now becoming a major concern in many states as a pest of agriculture and horticulture. Why? This insect, in all stages of development, causes damage to a wide range of vegetable and fruit crops during the spring and summer. In 2010, major losses of apple and peach crops were reported in Pennsylvania. Additionally, they have been found feeding on a wide variety of plant materials beyond fruit and vegetables, including chrysanthemums, sunflowers, maple, lilac, dogwood and honeysuckle, to name only a few.
