Tennessee, the volunteer state, is located in the central part of the eastern United States. The state has a population of more than 5 million people and occupies an area of 41,219 square-feet. Tennessee s government is divided into separate legislative, executive and judicial branches. Supreme executive power resides with the governor; judicial power with California s supreme, appellate, probate, criminal, chancery, juvenile, general and municipal courts and legislative power with a bicameral general assembly. The bicameral general assembly consists of as many as 99 members of the house and as many as 33 members of the senate. Home to numerous metropolitan cities, such as Knoxville, Nashville and Chattanooga, the state offers numerous events and attractions, including many state parks, recreational facilities, camping areas and shopping districts.Tennessee joined the U.S. in 1796 as its 16th state.
