Ultrasound
The treatment initially is with rest, ice and anti-inflammatory medicines. Adequate relaxation of the involved muscles and enhancement of physical fitness are the keys for prevention of worsening. Occupational therapy initially deploys soft tissue mobilization, active release therapy, ultrasound, muscle stretches, and then strengthening. If the degenerated area progresses to a large tear surgical repair should be attempted.
MRI
Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center in New Albany, Indiana has a Dedicated Extremity MRI. The MRI provides high field image quality, as well as a totally non-claustrophic and comfortable MRI experience for patients. This system consistently provides reliable, high image quality scanning of the hand, wrist, elbow, foot, ankle, and knee.

X-Rays
Computed Tomography
Your hand surgeon will do a physical examination and obtain x-rays. Sometimes an MRI or CT scan may be needed to get better detail of the extent of the injury. Ligaments (soft tissues that hold bones together), tendons, muscles and nerves may also be injured and will need treatment too.

Orthopedics
Dr. Ozyurekoglu was awarded an educational grant by Danish Government during his residency and had training in hand surgery at Rigshospital of Copenhagen University, Copenhagen, Denmark. He also received the basic science research grant award of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand in 2001. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Louisville Department of Surgery, Division of Hand Surgery and the University of Louisville Department of Orthopedics.He is an active member of the American Association for Hand Surgery and the American Society for Peripheral Nerve.
Arthroscopy
One of the most difficult diagnoses in the elbow pain is synovial fold syndrome. These folds of synovial membrane are remnants of embryological synovial tissue in the elbow joint. With extension of the elbow patient feels pain at the back of the elbow. The baseball player usually feels the pain at the end of the pitch cycle during the release phase. The MR imaging is diagnostic. It shows the synovial fold in symptomatic patients posteriorly just above the olecranon or between the humerus and the radius in the radiocapitellar joint This tissue averages 3 mm in thickness. The presence of synovial fold is not always symptomatic, but if symptoms arise, cortisone shots could be tried for relief. If the symptoms are bothersome and interfere with the game, we recommend arthroscopic surgery. In elbow arthroscopy, we can examine the entire elbow joint directly with 3.5 mm scopes and visualize the extent of the synovial fold. We remove this tissue with shavers. We release patients to activity and sports as soon as the incisions heal.
Wound Care
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Upon completion of residency, she pursued a fellowship in shoulder and hand surgery at the Hopital Prive La Chaitagneraie in Clermont- Ferrand, France under Dr. Pierre Metais among others. There, she honed her skills in minimally invasive surgery of the hand, wrist and shoulder and learned European approaches to common upper extremity conditions. She then completed two years of Hand and Microsurgery Fellowship at the Christine M. Kleinert Institute of Hand and Microsurgery serving as a Clinical and Senior Fellow from 2020-2022. She has been invited to join the Kleinert Kutz family and will be officially a part of the team this 2023.
Joint Replacement
Nder the guidance of these two dedicated and iconic surgeons, many “successful firsts” would establish Kleinert Kutz as the leader in hand surgery with procedures that included: hand transplants, Zone II Tendon repair, digital artery repair, cross hand repair, toe to hand transfer, free epiphyseal transfer, total distal radial joint replacement, total wrist resurfacing and replacement – to name a few.
Hand Surgery
Dr. Harold E. Kleinert and Dr. Joseph Kutz are the historical legends of hand surgery, and the foundation of what would become the team of world-renowned hand surgeons and educators of fellows, of which Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center remains today.
Orthopedic Surgery
Dr. Thirkannad graduated from Bangalore Medical College, India in 1990 and completed his Internship in 1991. He subsequently completed his Residency in Orthopedic Surgery in 1996 where he was awarded the Lupin Gold Award and Natarajan Gold Medal. He obtained a Masters Degree in Orthopedic Surgery in 1996 and was certified by the National Board of Examinations in 1997. He completed a Fellowship in Hand and Microsurgery from the National University of Singapore in 2003 and from the Christine M. Kleinert Institute for Hand and Microsurgery in 2004.
Arthroscopy
His special interests include sports and traumatic injuries of the wrist and elbow joints, wrist and elbow arthroscopy and arthroplasty, treatment of the peripheral nerves, and microsurgical reconstruction of upper extremity defects.
Reconstructive Surgery
Dr. Palazzo is a board-certified plastic surgeon who earned a bachelors and master’s degree in engineering from the University of Illinois. She received her medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in 1999. She then completed a residency in General, Plastic, and Reconstructive Surgery of St. Louis University, followed by a Fellowship in Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery of the Breast at Georgetown University in Washington DC. In 2006, she completed a one-year fellowship at the Christine M. Kleinert Institute for Hand and Microsurgery in Louisville, Ky.

Cosmetic Surgery

Cyst
Lesions
Nondisplaced fractures and pure cartilage lesions may be treated with immobilization and rest. Some surgeons recommend arthroscopic debridement and pinning if there is displacement. After removal of the cartilage, multiple holes are drilled in the defect using a pin to create fibrocartilage. However, more sophisticated treatment method of this condition is with replacement of the cartilage and the defect. For this purpose, we harvest cartilage and bone plugs from the knee to restore the defect. The surgeon maps the defect first then applies multiple osteochondral allografts. We harvest multiple 6 or 7 mm cylindrical shaped cartilage and bone plugs from the non-weight-bearing surface of the knee. Then same size holes are drilled in the elbow cartilage defect. The osteochondral graft plugs are applied with a press-fit effect, thus no fixation is necessary. Early elbow and knee motion is encouraged with braces. In about 8 weeks, the plugs heal and we start strengthening.

Dr. Monica B. Pecache was born in San Francisco, California. She completed her undergraduate in biology and medical education at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines. As a child, Dr. Pecache was very active in various sports and dance and continued to engage in these activities while pursuing medicine. This enduring love for athletics and movement lead her to obtain post-graduate education in Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at St. Luke’s Medical Center.
Physical Therapy
The Kleinert Kutz Hand Therapy and Orthotics Center brings comprehensive care to patients with acute or chronic issues relating to the hand, wrist, elbow, or shoulder through a combination of rehabilitation and custom orthotic application. These services are provided by our team of specialized therapists including occupational therapists, physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, and certified orthotic fitters. We utilize a collaborative team process to gain optimal outcomes for patients of all ages.
Occupational Therapy
While many of our patients are referred from a Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center specialist, any individual referred from a physician for upper extremity physical/occupational therapy or an orthosis, may be treated at the Kleinert Kutz Hand Therapy and Orthotics Center.

Lateral epicondylitis is an inflammation of the tendons that attach the muscles of the forearm to outside of the elbow. It is also commonly known as “tennis elbow” due to the relationship between this sport and the development of this condition. The function of these muscles is to raise the wrist and fingers.
