I would not recommend attending the Echoplex/Echo. The security there are inhumane and like to use people as punching bags for their own enjoyment. I witnessed my sister being beat up by multiple security guards all at once as she laid in fetal position on New Years Eve. She was kicked and stomped in the head, kicked in her stomach, legs, arms, and back. She was battered and beat up terribly and suffered multiple injuries. This was a horrific attack to view. The security at the Echoplex/Echo do not protect they target. Multiple bystanders pleaded with security to stop, but they continued with their inhumane brutality. Friends and I pleaded with them to stop, but they shoved and pushed us out as they continued to beat on her. I DO NOT recommend attending any event there. Anyone that attends is fair game to be attacked by security.

Being one of the very few venues of this size in LA (not too big, not too small) The Echoplex puts on some great shows.
Sadly, this is the only compliment I can think to give it.
The sound is almost always terrible because of the weird shape of the venue (low ceiling, long and narrow). Unless you have just the right number of people in there, the sound bounces around giving every band a muddy quality. Incidentally, the sound is always best in the bathrooms. Really.
Then, there's the air conditioning. If the place is not full (which it rarely is) it is freezing in there. They pump up the air conditioning for a sold-out crowd, no matter how many people actually fit. I was wearing a scarf, sweater and hood last time I was there, and even then I couldn't get warm (despite the fact that it was quite warm outside).
Finally, it is just grungy and not well maintained, even though it's pretty new and they don't make bands go on on time, so you're always sitting around waiting waiting waiting (I guess that means they sell more drinks).
Sadly, most small venues in LA are in a similar state, so if you like live music, you just have to learn to put up with it, or stay home.
