Jim M. Ingram, M.D. is a graduate of the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He served a pediatric internship and residency at Arkansas Children’s Hospital and UAMS. Afterward, he completed a two-year fellowship in allergy and immunology in children and adults at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. He joined the Little Rock Allergy and Asthma Clinic in 1994. He is certified by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology and American Board of Pediatrics. He has four children.

Eczema
Atopic dermatitis (eczema) is a condition that makes your skin red and itchy. It’s common in children but can occur at any age. Atopic dermatitis is long lasting (chronic) and tends to flare periodically and then subside. It may be accompanied by asthma or allergies. No cure has been found for atopic dermatitis but treatments and skin-care measures can relieve itching and prevent new outbreaks.
Lesions
Hives (urticaria) is a very common problem. Probably more than twenty percent of the general population experience at least one episode of urticaria and/or angioedema (swelling) during their lifetime. The red itchy bumps of hives may vary in size from very small to very large hives of several inches in diameter. The hives are caused by leaking fluid from the small blood vessels in the upper layer of the skin out into the tissues. In angioedema, the leaky blood vessels are deeper in the skin, and large swelling may result particularly around the eyelids, mouth, hands, or feet. Any area of the body can be involved with urticaria lesions or angioedema. Although not always present, it is very important to assess whether there are any allergic factors contributing to the problem.
Skin Care

Allergies
Some allergy problems are relatively simple while others are very complex. Therefore, the extent of your allergy evaluation will vary depending on your problem. You need to plan to be in the Little Rock Allergy & Asthma Clinic for two to three hours, and patients with morning appointments may need to return in the afternoon to complete the evaluation. Your workup will be in the early morning or early afternoon with a detailed history of allergy symptoms, general medical history, family history and physical examination. The second part of the workup is the allergy testing. If asthma or breathing difficulty is a part of your diagnosis, then further diagnostic testing may be done. This could include peak flow measurements and pulmonary function testing. Information concerning asthma triggers, asthma exacerbations, exercise-induced asthma, inhaler use and asthma medications will also be provided and explained. At the end of the evaluation you will be given the results of all tests and specific recommendations will be made. A written report will be sent to your physician.
